Rockathon Records Made My Day A Little Brighter

Well, the postman made my day a little brighter once again as he delivered my order from Rockathon Records yesterday.

My order consisted of Eat 11 (an art book in a series of Bob Pollard's collages, A dvd (Guided By Voices: The Who Went Home And Cried), a cd of Bob's called Zoom and a cd by one of the myriad side groups that Bob has done, Go Back Snowball. Eat 11 didn't take much time to review but I did try to give each picture time to reflect on it. I'm sure this is something I'll go back periodically to look at again. My intention is to listen to the cds this weekend and if possible watch the dvd as well. Have to wait to see how things shake out in the casa.

Another thing to make me happy was that I bought tickets to see X in OKC on July 1st. Since it's in the summer I'll be taking my son and my best friend Tommy will be accompanying us. It will be the perfect time to take my son on a mini road trip where we'll be able to eat some really good Pho. Can't wait for this show and for the rest of the vinyl that's on it's way but that is another story.

Look What The Mail Brought, Modern Sainthood, Koogmo And A Collage from Ryosuke Cohen

It's amazing how receiving a few pieces of mail can change my outlook on the day and make me happy. This past Thursday that very thing happened to me. It's not as if I was sad or angry or anything along those lines but just receiving what you see below certainly made my day.

This is the cover over Modern Sainthood zine as well as a postcard of art from editor (and writer) Eva Marie Solangon. Eva did an amazing job on the artwork, the layout and the color scheme for this issue. It's such a great job that I'm going to check out her other artwork.

So if you're asking well what's so special about that it's because for the first time ever a story of mine has been published. I'm happy to have accomplished something with my writing and am looking for opportunities to do more. As a matter of fact I have two more pieces that have been accepted in other zines and am waiting to receive them.So I got that going for me.

At first I thought a brown envelope was junk mail from on of those life insurance companies pandering to anybody they could get to respond. I was about to rip it in half when "Japan" jumped out to me. It was from Ryosuke Cohen, an artist who makes collages from drawings, stamps, pictures, etc that are sent to him. Once completed he sends a copy put to each person who has contributed. My little drawing is in the lower left corner. My wife thinks we should put it in a frame and I have to agree. This collage is really cool and interesting to look at. Perhaps in the near future I'll submit something else to Mr. Cohen. As you can see he is a fantastic artist.

Lastly is Koogmo zine. When I sent out my zines in search of other zinesters wanting to trade this is one of the last to respond but it was worth the wait. This is a great zine that I want to read more of. I devoured all of the issues rapidly and it's one that I can highly recommend. I need to step my game up. Let's see what comes in the mail next. Hope it's as good as this batch.

Ten For Tuesday Episode 173: Guided By Voices

Yes I know I'm releasing this on a Friday but haven't you come to expect this? I've gone down the Guided By Voices rabbit hole in the last five months or so and become obsessed with all things musical by Robert Pollard. To that end Guided By Voices joins the exalted company of the infinitesimally small number of artists that I have dedicated an entire episode to. This is not intended to be a best of list, it's just what I chose from what I had available. I could easily do twenty episodes and not even touch the depths of great Robert Pollard songs. Perhaps in the (near) future I'll do another for GBV or Bob's other projects.

notmovingpictures Episode 097: R.I.P. Ranking Roger

After a long time off I return to talk about the sad news of Ranking Roger passing away. Following that is an update on the lyrics I've been writing lately and how this time Aaron and I are starting to get the music and the words together faster. Then it's talk about another Zine Faire and how amazing a writer that Cassandra Khaw is, going to see Deals Gone Slack, going down the Guided By Voices rabbit hole, the Waxmasters Record Show and more.

Opening music: Alloy - Live To See The Day
Closing music: The Beat featuring Ranking Roger - A Good Day For Sunshine

First Adult Collage Attempt

Just a half hour or so ago I made a collage from things that were sent to me by Node Pajomo Zine. When I looked in the envelope my first thought was "what do I do with these?" My second thought was "I'll make a collage out of them. You have to realize, I haven't made a collage since grade school and that was many decades ago. So why did this thought seem natural to me? Why now? Of course I second, third and fourth guessed myself as I tried several layouts.

For whatever reason after I came home from work and was done petting the cats and trying to get my wife to move from the sofa to the bed, it seemed like I had to do it right now. So here you have it in all it's glory. What do I call it? No idea at the moment. It is what it is and I'll take that.

Ten For Tuesday Episode 172: R.I.P. Ranking Roger

Last week Ranking Roger left this mortal coil. The music that he helped create was some of the favorites from my youth and still to this day. This is my attempt at a tribute.
