I saw the Skoidats, Inspecter 7 and Thumper in Charleston, Wv at The Empty Glass in the latter part of the 90s on a wild night whose exact date I cannot remember. It was a raucous show and I mean that in the best of ways. I can only find pictures of Inspecter 7 when they were in the audience so I'll wait for a later date and share some from the next time I saw them in Huntington, Wv..

notmovingpictures Episode 089: John Doe

It's been a while so this is a catching up episode. Another was about a third of the way edited when I decided to delete it and start on this one. Just felt right. Mostly I talk about taking the family to see John Doe at the Woody Guthrie Center where he talked about his book and performed some acoustic songs. Afterwards he took the time to great everyone who wanted to meet him individually and sign some autographs and take pictures. It was a great night and I left there feeling very happy.

In the future I can say that I will be seeing Henry Rollins in Oklahoma City in a few months and possibly Agent Orange, Alejandro Escovedo and the Descendents at various venues and dates. Time will only tell. Time we seem to take for granted when we really only have a limited amount of it. Thing is, we don't know when it will run out. Ten days or ten years, nobody can say for sure.

This past weekend my wife, son and I decided to go to Riverside park and go into the sewer there to check out the graffiti, some of which is artistic and some, well, not so much. Loneliness always wins out.

We’re well on our way to the domination of anarchy.

It didn’t seem like Christmas.

Each loves another they can’t decide.

They’re playing out their masochistic tendencies.

The mighty wind howls and the storms will blow.

The prettiest picture I’ve ever seen is the rain in the trees.

Suicide hurts others, not just you, not just me.

One man sits alone while others sit in a group.

One man works two jobs and another cheats on his spouse.

I want your love I want your help. I’m afraid to risk it.

You got what you wanted and left me for another.

I’m all alone in a room full of people.

Sometimes I feel like my heart is broken into pieces.

She showed up with him again.

My blood is spilling on the floor.

Doing Lines 1

I’ve written a lot of stuff over the years. You could call part of it lyrics or poetry or spoken word with some short stories thrown in and a movie script of two for good measure. Some of it was good and some of it not so good. Okay, some of it was utter crap. Since I’ve done nothing with the vast majority of it I decided to draw out a line or two from here and there and put them to good use. This is especially good for the junk that never seemed to work quite the way I wanted it to. At least some good will come of it. If you’re thinking “Didn’t Henry Rollins do something like this once?” my answer is yes. Yes he did. What’s your point? His version was intentionally written to be very brief. My version is taken from larger pieces and I call it Doing Lines. We'll see if this leads anywhere.

My pockets are full of empty promises.

The youth are unfulfilled. Their minds never tested.

He was assuming the form of the dead.

I said hello. She asked me how much money I make.

His father stole his money and changed his phone number to unlisted.

She once threw a knife in my general direction.

His cousin never picked him up. His uncle never answered the phone.

I was divorced. She was married. There was something between us.

She never told me she had a boyfriend.

I was too old for her anyway.

Now I can’t remember her last name.

My Mom re-used the film. Now her picture is gone.

Your rights were violated yet you’re the guilty victim.

Sunken eyes stare at the page.

Hold on, don’t leave me again.

TV and the radio became my best friends when I moved into town.

Criminals walk free in our government.

Why don’t you get drunk and be somebody.

Sitting alone on the couch laughing at private jokes.

Nerds have more fun.

Our youth are under siege by the demon heavy metal.

Just remember, you chose them over us.

You wonder why I think the way I do.

You got the looks, you got the dough.

notmovingpictures Episode 86: 1318 4th Ave And Me

These things never seem to end up how I want them to. While listening to the latest episode of the Henry & Heidi podcast I got inspired to tell the story of the time after I had gotten out of the Army and returned home thinking I could at least find cool, live music at the only alternative music venue in the Huntington, WV area called Gumbys, only to find that it had closed. It would be reincarnated under at least two more names later and I was able to see a ton of really cool bands at that space. As I thought about those times I could hear my thoughts in my head in my own voice and it sounded great.  Lots of interesting comments and memories seemed to bubble up from my unconscious. When I got the chance to record however all of that seemed to have faded away and what you have left is here for you to listen to. Hey, at least I talk about seeing the Rollins Band and Clutch in the same year at that very same spot, 1318 4th Avenue.

notmovingpictures Episode 084: Reflecting On Failure, Reading and Racism

This episode has sat on my laptop halfway edited for about three weeks. No more I say. The time is now. More book talk is featured where I have re-read Madhouse Fog by Sean Carswell, then I was in the middle of This Is Between Us by Kevin Sampsell and it led me to think about divorce and my ex-wife's daughter. Of coursed I need to say something about my first ever visit to the Veteran's Administration and how that went. Lastly my experience going to see Black Panther and overhearing two old white racist women commenting on the poster for the movie. You gotta listen to understand it all.
