Why Life

I'm not a fan of days like this. When I can only daydream of another life. Of a happy life. All I can feel at this moment is the need to be alone, in a dark room. I mean a room so dark it is completely devoid of light. There I could curl up in a ball and close my eyes, shut off my brain and drift. Not thinking or feeling, just drifting.

On days like this when the thought of happiness seems unobtainable, I can't even have that. Why isn't there a reset button I could hit? Why can't I start over without this baggage? Why does the thought of more time seem so unbearable? What is the point of all of this?

Poetry From A Non Poet # 2

Love is a suitable form of suicide
Leaving lies the only children born
Dive under the memories look in the mirror
Before everything fades to black

Life (lyrics, poem/spoken word)

Life - written 2/13/22

Dissatisfaction

Enveloping

Worn like a cloak

Comfortably enclosing

Unhappiness rules

The day throughout

Kept in a prison

Of my own making

Decisions years ago

Determined this

No suicidal ideations

Though sometimes

I wish I could

Disappear

Fade

Into the dark recesses

Drifting without hurting

My only desire

Not to feel this way

Not living

Just existing

Feeling Like I Can Breathe Again

During the last six months a lot of things I do have been left withering on the vine. Unlike many people who have used their quarantine time to start (and finish) many projects or to learn new things, I went the opposite direction and just stopped doing a lot of things that I enjoy. Like this blog and my podcasts. To be fair, Podomatic stopped recognizing my files or I'd probably still be doing the occasional episode.

Also unlike a lot of people who have been bettering themselves, I've never really had much of a quarantine. I've gone to work steadily and even got outsourced. After the first few months of the shutdown restaurants in Tulsa reopened gradually and then fully, for the most part. There haven't been any sporting events or concerts but movie theaters have reopened as well. The only thing really different is that I wear a mask in public and part of the time at work. Life has gone on.

Work has been difficult. Starting in January I had to drive 55 minutes to another city to cover a site because both of my crew there quit their jobs on very short notice. Not only did I have to do my job but I also had to cover the emergency release of information job for that site. Then I had to drive back home, so not only was I getting up an hour earlier I was also spending almost 2 hours of my day driving. All of that led to a great deal of stress and anxiety and even had me doubting if I could do this job adequately. That's never happened to me before.

Because I had to work like this I let a lot of things go. For instance, I felt as if I couldn't take any time off since no other member of my very short handed team could make the drive on a daily basis. So I cancelled my annual physical at the VA, cancelled my appointments with my therapist and stopped going to the gym. My physical and mental health started declining. I'd wake up in the middle of the night and my mind immediately went to what I hadn't gotten done the day before and was going to get into trouble over.

My boss wasn't happy with me and I just plain wasn't happy with my life. I wanted out of the situation badly but worried what would happen to my family if I quit my job. Finally I had a serious talk with my manager and let her know what was going on with me. Another site lead gave me some suggestions which helped me be keep my team better organized and focused as well as myself. The three empty positions we had were filled and though training new people wasn't easy, things have improved gradually.

Now I can take some time off and address my mental and physical health. I've felt like starting my projects again instead of vegging out on YouTube videos after coming home from work. New zines will be forthcoming, perhaps even some new songs providing I can find someone who can do the music. I still don't know if I want to remain in this job. After all, I didn't choose this company, I was outsourced to them and I had to work, for my families sake.

Things have improved enough for now though to the point where I can breath a little and take measure of my surroundings and assess where I am and where I want to be. It's a start. I'm just glad my heart isn't pounding as my anxiety and depression rage out of control. I'll take it, for now, but my eye is on the future. Time will tell.

notmovingpictures Episode 102: Covid 19 Rambling But At Least X Keeps Rocking

This episode was recorded before recent events in the U.S.

It took a pandemic and being outsourced for the 2nd time in 3 years to get me to put out a new episode. Lots to ramble about. Coronavirus and it's impact and how the rich don't care if you and I die, so long as they make their money that is. I haven't been writing much which is the opposite from most people who are staying at home. They seem able to put songs out, write stories and reviews or do artwork. Hell, X put out a killer new record which rocks! I can't seem to get anyone to write some music for my lyrics. Come listen to me bitch about it.

Closing music: X - Alphabetland

Hole

So I followed a link on Twitter to a poem from Ali Trotta that, for lack of a better word, moved me. I felt the need to, not respond, but get this out of me. Admitting this to myself isn't easy but it's part of my healing process I guess. Change though, I have no idea how to after so many years.

Hole

I don’t know if I was born
Or shaped this way
I only know this way
Living in fear
That I’m not good enough
For people to like
That I’m not good enough
For a woman to love
That I’m not good enough
To exist
That any woman will find
my love a disappointment
and leave me alone
If I’m already alone
Why take a chance
I have no hope
No expectations
Only daydreams
Of reshaping my past
They can never come true
I’m left with myself
Not loving myself
Hating myself
Wanting to change
Not knowing how
You can’t grow anything
When you have a hole
In your heart
Sometimes walls are the
Only thing you can build

No matter how painful

notmovingpicturres Episode 98: Zines, Collages, X and Guided By Voices

Yeah, I know, it's been a while and I've even had this episode ready for over a month. Why the delay? Because depression sucks and it's had a hold of me lately. One of the issues is a new anti-depressant that I was prescribed for insomnia as well as depression. Thing is, some of the side effects are insomnia and depression if that makes any kind of sense. Anyway, I'm in a creative mood and I need to grab it while I can.

On to episode 98 in which I talk about zines, of course. Specifically Modern Sainthood which includes a piece I wrote and Koogmo. Plus a collage done by Ryosuke Cohen in Japan that I sent in a weird little drawing to and he included it. Then I speak of not being to see X this month in Tulsa but thankfully I will see them in July in OKC. Then there is my infatuation with Guided By Voices and how I have been trying to acquire as much as I can. I do circle back around to more zine talk before closing it all up. I'll try not to take so much time for the next episode but I promise nothing. It is what it is.

notmovingpictures Episode 088: Sometimes The World Bums Me Out

Episode 88 finds me expounding more on my recent depression diagnosis and my journey to understanding how I got where I am. Then I describe how the father of a friend of my son got bent out of shape at me and my response. Right or wrong it's how I felt and I let him know. Then I get into our bully of a president and how the NFL caved in to him and how the conservative press continues to back him in the face of his continued self serving existence. The man lies and badly at that.

notmovingpictures Episode 87: Rejection Sucks

On this episode I drop the news about finally making myself submit a short story I wrote only to have it rejected and what my plans are for it (and other writing projects) moving forward. Then I talk about being diagnosed with depression and how it seems to run in my family. Next I talk about my experiences visiting Peru and how they differ from a travel podcast I have been listening to before segueing back into depression and my writing. Lastly I read the rejected short story Aware. I've already started editing it again so it will turn up somewhere soon. I promise.

notmovingpictures Episode 067: Don't Take It Easy

I recorded this episode on my laptop using Audacity and I'm not entirely happy with the results but it is what it is and I cleaned it up the best I could. A few hours ago I got the news that my mother had another major heart attack so I scrapped what I had already recorded and did this instead. It's just how I feel at this particular moment. Adrift, unsure and waiting. That's life.

The Girl That I Didn't Understand

In late 1991 I re-enlisted in the Army and got to choose my next duty station. The Presidio in San Francisco was available and it was very tempting for a variety of reasons but ultimately I chose Walter Reed Army Medical Center because it was reasonably close to my hometown and my family whom I had not seen a great deal of ever since I first joined the Army. In February of 1992 I left Ft Hood and traveled home for some leave time. The trip itself was quite a story but instead of that I want to talk about someone that I came to refer to as the girl that I didn't understand.

While at home I went out with my younger sister Karen to a bar in Ironton, our hometown. Karen is very different from me. Where I am more reserved and uncomfortable in public she is the exact opposite and can go into a room without knowing anybody and you would swear that she knew every single person in the room. That was the case on this night. We spent some time there and after a while she was standing at the bar and I went up there as well when I noticed this blond girl standing to my left. She was attractive and was mouthing the words to a song playing on the jukebox and staring straight at me.

This had never happened to me before (and hasn't since). I did the classic movie thing of looking behind me to see if there was someone else standing there that she was singing to but there wasn't anybody there. I looked directly into her eyes, pointed to myself and asked her "Me?" She nodded the affirmative. This was foreign territory for me and I wasn't sure what I should do. I mean girls just did not come on to me, ever. I realized that if I let this opportunity pass me by then I'd never let myself live it down so I slid over next to her and started talking.

As I said earlier I've never been comfortable in public settings, especially social ones. I don't like going to places where there are a lot of people, I just feel like I don't belong there. However, she was attractive and I was lonely and was trying to get over the breakup of my marriage so in I went. We talked for some time and I ended up giving her a ride home. Don't get all excited here, nothing happened more than a few moments of intense kissing and then she was gone. We arranged to go on a proper date (to the same bar) and while I enjoyed her company I was not having an overwhelmingly good time as my social anxieties were in full effect. At some point she started playing pool with a guy that she knew and was a friend of one of her friends.

She came up to me and wanted to ask if it was okay if he gave her a ride to her friends house. I'm not exactly a dummy so I knew what was going on, this guy was the type that she was attracted to on a very basic level and she finally had a chance at him. The thing is, even though I was angry that she wanted to ditch out of our date I felt I had no real say in this. This was only our first date, I didn't "own" her, so who was I to say anything. I told her that much and as they piled into his car I spun my tires on the gravel and got out of there, angry at how I had been screwed over again by life and vowed that I'd never talk to her again.

The next day she called me and although I didn't really want to talk to her I did but I tried to be short with my answers. She didn't take the hint though and wanted to meet me at the Ashland mall after she got off of work. Against my better judgment I agreed and at the food court we talked and before I knew it everything was okay, so long as either one of us didn't speak of the night before. If we ignored it then it didn't really happen I guess. We talked about Washington D.C. and how she loved it there and that she'd like to visit me once I got settled in and she could get the time off. A few days later I was on my way to report to my duty station and although I did think of her a little I was pretty busy getting used to my new routine.

A few weeks passed by when I had a knock on my barracks door. There was a phone call for me and you guessed it, it was her. She was coming to town on the next Friday and wanted to see me which did wonders for my mood. I offered to pick her up at the train station but she said her friends were picking her up and that she'd call me as soon as she got to their place so that we could arrange a meeting as soon as possible. All day Friday I was anxious, I couldn't wait for the workday to end. After it did I stayed in my room waiting for the phone call. After more than enough time had passed I started going out to the CQ desk (Charge of Quarters) and asked if there was a message for me. Nothing. I kept checking with them every twenty to thirty minutes and I'm sure they were sick of the sight of me before long.

Eventually I gave up and sank into my bed as I allowed all of the negative thoughts to swarm over me. The big question was why? Why do any of this if she had no real interest in me. Why call me at all if she didn't intend to follow through? Why call if she wasn't sure she'd even have time to see me? Was she ever interested in me or was this all just a big game to her? It's possible that she lost my number or that there was some kind of accident (the train didn't crash, I checked) but the best I could surmise was that I was her backup plan and she didn't end up needing me. The only thing that was clear was that my already fragile ego was at an all time low and didn't look to be improving anytime soon. No answers were forthcoming as I never heard from her again and that's how I came to call her the girl that I didn't understand.

Time goes on

About 3 weeks ago I made a post about not even knowing if my marriage was going to make it. My wife had said some pretty horrible things to me and honestly I didn't even know if I wanted to keep on trying. What a difference a day makes. We talked the next day and she was going through a few things but explained that she didn't mean what she had said and indeed did love me and wanted us to stay together and works things out. Since then I've turned a corner of sorts and come out of the semi-depression I was in and feel much better about life in general and am even making plans for future events since clearly waiting for something good to happen just doesn't work. You have to put yourself in a position for good things to happen. Basically I mean you need to be working towards a clearly defined goal in order for positive things to happen for and to you. Sitting around dreaming while nice and time consuming just doesn't get it done. Unfortunately there won't be a knock at the door where the perfect thing you want in life will happen to and for you. You've got to get out there and make it happen and now I'm planning for it.

When I say i was depressed don't get the wrong idea. It wasn't clinical or anything like that. It's just that off and on I would get depressed about work, my marriage and personal things that I've not accomplished in life. The thing was I wasn't doing anything to realize my dreams, to make them reality. That's all about to change my friends. I feel something very different and am making my plans, putting it in writing with a realistic plan of action. It doesn't even matter if I fail as long as I put forth the effort and do my best. Okay it matters some, I won't lie. Anyway, this is the year I start learning again and get off my duff for better or worse and accomplish something. More on this later.
