I Update The Look Of The Blog Every Decade, Whether It Needs It Or Not

Guess I should update this blog since I really haven't done much to it in years. Make it more modern or at least give it a change. Lately I've had my zines reviewed in a few places and most recently it was on Seagreen Zines Youtube channel. Who knows, maybe one or two people might find their way here after wandering through the internet. Stranger things have happened.

Speaking of zines, in addition to the last issue of I'm Not From Here I Just Live Here that I just sent out, I included my first poetry zine called Does This Count? Poetry From A Non Poet. It's all haiku which is something new for me. Then I realized today that I didn't include my email or mail address much less the blog on the latest group of zines that I sent out. Kinda self-defeatist thing to do. But that is par for the course. Guess I won't expect too many hits off of that.

Talking about haiku, a few weeks back, as I explained to my wife how sometimes words just come to me, as if I was turning on a faucet, you could say inspiration hit. In less than an hour and a half I wrote 19 more haiku (what's the plural of haiku?). Some of them were even good! For whatever reason my mind started coming up with line after line. Some came fully formed with little thought. Some came a line here and a line there and not necessarily in the regular 5-7 5 haiku line order.

Without a doubt I'm going to need to do some polishing on them but most of them will probably be in my 2nd issue of DTC. Don't groan, you don't have to read it if you don't want to. I'll still send it out to my regular people though. It's something creative and not too hard to make into a zine.

The people I send my zines to generally fall into three general categories. The first is those who trade with me. The second is those that have done something that I like. The third is the (rare) few who send me a buck or two for postage. It doesn't even matter to me if I get anything regularly from anyone. Whenever they can or if they can, if they can't that's fine. I'll keep sending them if people like them. If they hate them though, just don't tell me about it. Rejection sucks.

Anyway, back to updating the look of the blog. Seems I'll have to do some searching to figure out how to add some buttons or whatever they're called these days. I've no idea where to start. Or maybe I'll just assign it to my I.T. guy. He's only 13 years old but pretty good. Besides, he owes me, you know, for bringing him into the world and all. A bribe may be in order to sufficiently motivate him but I've an idea for that. Stay tuned.

New Podcast Host? Not So Fast Sir.

Well, it looks as if I spoke too soon. It seemed as if anchor.fm was to be the new home for Ten For Tuesday and it would solve all of my technical problems I've been having with Podomatic. As the old adage goes, if it looks too good to be true then it probably is.

The very next day after switching to anchor they took Ten For Tuesday down. Here's their email to me:

Hey there,
We’re writing to notify you that we found evidence of potentially infringing content in your podcast, Ten For Tuesday. As a result, it has been taken down.
Per our Terms of Service we take action on potentially infringing podcasts to protect legal entities and our users from formal copyright claims.
If you have any further questions about the legality of content in your podcast, we suggest reaching out to a legal specialist directly.
Thank you for understanding,
Anchor Trust & Safety

To tell the truth, I didn't even think about anything going wrong. After all, the vast majority of the bands I play aren't very big and some even message me thanking me for playing their music. My reply to anchor included that thought as well as the fact that I intentionally chose not to monetize the podcast. It would be wrong for me to try to make money off of other people's copyrighted material. I even asked if I could add something about not owning the content and that it was the property of the copyright owners.

anchor wasn't having it. Here's their reply to my reply:

Team Anchor (Anchor)

Hi there,

Having taken a look at your podcast, I can see it was removed for potentially infringing music content. By uploading music you may not own the rights to, you may be distributing it unlawfully. As per our Terms of Service, we take action on podcasts that carry a risk of infringement.

You are welcome to start a new podcast without music content, but please note that any evidence of potential infringement will make it subject to removal.

I appreciate this may be disappointing news, but hope you understand.

Best,
Team Anchor
Anchor ⚓️
Do you think I appreciate their offer to start a new podcast without musical content? Hell no. You would be correct in thinking that I should have read through their terms of service carefully but come on. It's 2020, not 1995. There are a ton of music podcasts out there in the world that do things just like I do. Some of them even have sponsors so that they can make money.
My initial inclination was to send an expletive laden response telling them what my exact thoughts were but it's not worth the effort to get myself worked up. I won't change their minds no matter how much sense I make. My options right now are to just put up with the issues I've had with Podomatic or do some proper research on another hosting site, perhaps one that I have to pay for that I know allows music podcasts. I'm looking in your direction Libsyn.
For now I think I'll delete all of the episodes on Podomatic and start fresh while I do my research. Perhaps this is a sign to let Ten For Tuesday die off. Time will tell.

Ten For Tuesday Has Changed Podcast Hosts

Podomatic no longer hosts my music podcast, Ten For Tuesday. You can still go to the Podomatic site, I haven't deleted it, but moving forward I felt I needed something that didn't constantly give me issues and make it hard to publish a new episode.

Case in point, last night I uploaded episode 190 and even embedded a player with it here on this blog. Then I closed my laptop. When I came back and only needed to copy the link of the episode for Twitter and Facebook there was no end of problems. Podomatic now said that there was an issue and the episode couldn't be published. This was AFTER it had already been published.

Then it told me that there was a problem with the audio so I deleted it and uploaded the file again. Now Podomatic showed as if I had uploaded the file twice. Not knowing where to go with this I deleted the episode, signed out again, before signing in and trying to start all over. This time Podomatic showed as if the file was in there three times and took me way over the free hosting limit.

There were only three episodes at this point besides the one I was trying in vain to upload. Frustrated beyond belief I said the hell with it and deleted the episode once more, logged out and shut down my computer. Strangely enough, when I logged on today the episode that couldn't be published was back in draft form. That was the last straw. Once again I deleted it and started looking for another free hosting site.

This led me to Anchor. No longer am I limited by how many episodes I can have at one time. Originally, with Podomatic I was able to keep 6 or 7 episodes on at a time. Whenever I had a new one I would move the oldest to archive.org before uploading. Over time, for whatever reason, the number of episodes that could be hosted dwindled to 4.

Hopefully all of those problems are behind me. All I can say is that uploading episode 190 went smoothly and I had no issues embedding a player here on the blog as well as using the link to the page for social media.

Time will tell if I also move notmovingpictures. I am able to keep more episodes of it since it's a talking podcast and doesn't contain a lot of music. One nice bonus is that Anchor also will contact the major hosting/listening sites so that your podcast can be found more easily. So far so good. At least I'm not frustrated tonight.

Awesome, A (Very) Short Story

This was written before the recent protests over police brutality, as a comment on the sad verbal (and sometimes physical) attacks on those of Asian ancestry, that were popping up in the news as Covid 19 cases were exploding worldwide. While I can't write about that in the 1st person, I thought I should do something. Now it seems kind of, well, tame to be honest. Even though it's still in draft form I wanted to get it out before more time goes by. Every time I look at it I start editing so I'm sure it will change in the future. One thing is sure, I could use somebody else's opinion.

P.S. This is complete fiction. Thankfully I have witnessed nothing like this.

Awesome

The pharmacy closed at eight which left me only ten minutes to dash in, grab my medicine and get out while the getting was good. This wasn’t exactly a great neighborhood to be in, especially in the evening, so speed was of the essence. Launching myself from my car I clicked the locks without looking back, laser-focused on my mission to get to the front door of the pharmacy. A scruffy looking man standing against the wall, wearing a beater that barely covered his beer gut suddenly yelled “Go back to China you Corona Virus bitch!” His target was a lady in scrubs and a mask who had just exited the store.

Shocked at his vitriol I skid to a stop roughly ten feet away from where he stood, instantly torn as to whether I should stand up for her or just continue on my way. After all, like I said, the pharmacy was close to closing and I really needed my medicine. I know, it’s a shitty way to think and I’m ashamed that I had that thought, but I did. Something about being cooped up at work for eight plus hours a day before going home and being cooped up for the rest of the day just made me think selfishly. No excuse though.

I couldn’t ignore this imbecile though but before I could open my mouth the lady spun on her heel and slapped him full on his right cheek. Stunned, he staggered back a few steps and his countenance changed from angry to bewildered to pathetic all in less than a second and yes, it was that rapid but also that clear. This was not the reaction he had sought. His eyes became moon sized and he sputtered ”You you you can’t do that.” In a clear Okie drawl she yelled back at him “I was born here jackass! And not all Asians are from China just like not all Spanish speakers are from Mexico! Get a clue!” Right then and there a huge, sloppy grin popped onto my face.

She hadn’t needed my assistance at all. Maybe she was fed up with the crappy treatment towards those of Asian descent that exposed yet another side of the racist underbelly of our society. Maybe she was just tired and wanted to get home after a hard day. Or maybe she was a strong woman who didn’t take crap from anyone, least of all a racist prick attempting to confront her. I’d like to think it was the last one.

When it was clear that the poor excuse for a man was sufficiently cowed she spun on her heel and walked straight towards me. Her eyes were smoldering as they focused on my personage, perhaps in expectation of another imbecilic attack. Instead, she received an ovation. All I could say was “You are so awesome” in a voice that did nothing to hide my awe and admiration. Seeing I was no threat she continued on and I could swear she had a twinkle in her eye as she replied” Damn right I am!”

notmovingpictures Episode 102: Covid 19 Rambling But At Least X Keeps Rocking

This episode was recorded before recent events in the U.S.

It took a pandemic and being outsourced for the 2nd time in 3 years to get me to put out a new episode. Lots to ramble about. Coronavirus and it's impact and how the rich don't care if you and I die, so long as they make their money that is. I haven't been writing much which is the opposite from most people who are staying at home. They seem able to put songs out, write stories and reviews or do artwork. Hell, X put out a killer new record which rocks! I can't seem to get anyone to write some music for my lyrics. Come listen to me bitch about it.

An Attempt At Writing A Haiku

Okay, For what it's worth I was sitting around with nothing better to do so I came up with a haiku. At least I think it is. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. Of course, I had to do it my way so there you go. This is based from an idea for a zine that I have thought about but not written yet. Seemed like a good idea at the time.

 Tail

I discovered
We all have a shit story
Inside our own head

Update: So it's a few hours later and this one popped in my head. It took about two minutes to write so that may attest to it's quality or lack thereof. I have no idea what I'm doing or why.

Actuality

A pondering mind
Is a terrible burden
When passion is gone

Hole

So I followed a link on Twitter to a poem from Ali Trotta that, for lack of a better word, moved me. I felt the need to, not respond, but get this out of me. Admitting this to myself isn't easy but it's part of my healing process I guess. Change though, I have no idea how to after so many years.

Hole

I don’t know if I was born
Or shaped this way
I only know this way
Living in fear
That I’m not good enough
For people to like
That I’m not good enough
For a woman to love
That I’m not good enough
To exist
That any woman will find
my love a disappointment
and leave me alone
If I’m already alone
Why take a chance
I have no hope
No expectations
Only daydreams
Of reshaping my past
They can never come true
I’m left with myself
Not loving myself
Hating myself
Wanting to change
Not knowing how
You can’t grow anything
When you have a hole
In your heart
Sometimes walls are the
Only thing you can build

No matter how painful
