notmovingpictures Episode 084: Reflecting On Failure, Reading and Racism

This episode has sat on my laptop halfway edited for about three weeks. No more I say. The time is now. More book talk is featured where I have re-read Madhouse Fog by Sean Carswell, then I was in the middle of This Is Between Us by Kevin Sampsell and it led me to think about divorce and my ex-wife's daughter. Of coursed I need to say something about my first ever visit to the Veteran's Administration and how that went. Lastly my experience going to see Black Panther and overhearing two old white racist women commenting on the poster for the movie. You gotta listen to understand it all.

Then I found the band Last In Line which featured (amongst their lineup of old Dio bandmates) bassist Jimmy Bain. While preparing the podcast I found out that Jimmy Bain died on Monday, January 25th. Weird timing for me. Another one gone, it's happening far too quickly. Enough of this, I'll let the music speak.

Ten For Tuesday Episode 073: The Road To Judas Priest

Well, I decided to upload this one early. The more I thought about it I decided not to wait and see if I could get it uploaded after the long drive we're facing tomorrow. Why chance it and besides, I'll be tired and the prospect of staying up trying to make hotel wi-fi work for me isn't too appealing. So it's early like a birthday or Christmas gift. You're welcome.

As the episode title says we are on our way to see Judas Priest in Denver, Colorado. Now I've seen them before in Stuttgart while I was stationed in Germany but Tommy (my co-host for notmovingpictures podcast) has never been able to see them. He's seen a lot of concerts but it just never happened for him. Until now that is. We plan on going up Pike's Peak and seeing the Garden Of The Gods as well. What's that got to do with this episode you ask? Not a lot but I felt like talking about it. Just when I thought I had figured out the mono/stereo problem it was made very clear to me that I in fact had not. So the lineup remains fluid until the very last bit of recording. Ah well, at least I'm on a road trip and that means a lot.

Bachelor For A Weekend, Sort Of

Well, My wife went off to a weekend seminar/retreat that a friend had invited her to and took our four year old son with her so that left me by myself and loosely a bachelor for a few days. As expected I returned to bachelor eating mode and have had sandwiches, hotdogs and hamburger helper. What I didn't realize is that I'd be spending as much time as I have working around the house. Today for instance I cut (most) of the grass, cleared off the brush pile, did two loads of laundry (and folded and put away last weeks laundry) as well as washed dishes and attempted to straighten things up a bit.

Now think of it even though I didn't get off work until 11:30 Friday night I didn't go see any bands play, nor did I go to the movies and I didn't even get to write anything, until now that is, and I need to get to bed so I have to make this quick. So nothing personally gratifying got done and I mostly did things around the house for the betterment of the family.

At least I was able to watch the final two and a half shows of the last season of The Inbetweeners which is a brilliant British comedy about four friends in high school who are neither the coolest or the geekiest so they are inbetween, hence the title. It ended somewhat strangely normal where there was nothing settled in the characters lives. Simon is moving away because of his fathers work even though his last year of school is almost over. The lads play a texting game where everyone gets someone else's phone and sends a text, no rules. Simon gets a return text from the girl he's loved most of his life and fearing the worst he reads it silently before smiling and saying somewhat cryptically "brilliant." Then they end up throwing up on each other in the tent (after his car ends up in the lake) and start to walk home. And that's it, shows over. At least there is an Inbetweeners movie to be released next month although I don't know when or if it will come out here in the States.

So that's been my day. Pretty boring eh? Tomorrow hopefully I'll go to by best friend Tom's house to work on the lyrics for a new song and maybe even start another. That way at least I'll finally have done something creative with my time although I did manage to find some good music and arrange a playlist for my Ipod of late 70s and early 80s British music earlier today. It consists of bands like The Ruts, The Skids, The (English) Beat, The Clash, Sex Pistols, The Specials, The Jam and on and on. So I've got that going for me. For now though it's time to sleep.

Spotlight on - The Clash

I felt like listening to The Clash when I got home tonight. Just a little before going to bed. Unfortunately It's kind of difficult to find original videos. Youtube is full of covers or people dancing to the music and so forth. So you get what you get and if you can do better go for it. These videos really show how the band managed to expand their sound beyond punk rock and still remain vital, exciting and important. I've already talked about how I missed seeing Joe Strummer out of my own stupidity before he died so I won't go on about that. I'll just post the videos, some are just the music but these are some of my favorite Clash songs.

Joe Strummer and the Latino Rockabilly War - Trash City

I've been thinking about this Joe Strummer song a lot lately and have to say that in my humble opinion it's pretty amazing! This is a more obscure song from Strummer's solo career after The Clash broke up and is from the soundtrack to the movie "Permanent Record." Although it never hit in the top 40 and isn't known all over the world it doesn't matter because it's such a wonderful song. We lost a major talent when Joe died. Enjoy...............



Unfortunately I never got to see Joe play live although I could have. While doing my radio show at WMUL (Marshall University) in the latter 90s he came to Cincinnati and I had good connections with his label (Hell-Cat Records) and could have gotten free tickets and possibly even a show I.D. but I was at a point where I didn't want to drive 2 hours to see a show. Basically I was too lazy and it wasn't too much later that he died and I realized what I mistake I had made. That just goes to show that there are some things in life you shouldn't pass up on because you never know if you'll get another chance. R.I.P. Joe Strummer.

One Hit Wonders Or Not?

My favorite podcast (Stuck In The 80s) frequently does shows with topics like One Hit Wonders of 1983, 1984, etc. Invariably when they tab an artist or group as a one hit wonder they get a slew of complaints from all over the world from fans who assure them that their favorite artist/band had many more hits than they give them credit for. They offer as evidence the chart positions from their countries for these artists. For me this is a problem. You see if I am living in America and am doing my own list it means I’m talking about the American charts. I didn’t grow up in England, India, Peru or any other country. I grew up listening to music and watching videos in America so it only makes sense to refer to the American charts since that is what I experienced and lived through.

It doesn’t mean that there weren’t any foreign bands on the list, just that I’m using my country of origin as the basis for my information. There are a ton of foreign bands whose music I adored (still do as a matter of fact) such as The Clash, The Specials, The English Beat, Big Country and countless others. Unfortunately I did not live in these bands countries and as such the favorite songs of that era by these individual listeners in their country has absolutely no bearing or influence on my life because I never experienced it. The flip side to this is that they never experienced mine either. I’ve listened to quite a few interviews where an artist talks about how in America a particular song was huge but in his own home country it did nothing at all. There are artists who couldn’t get recognized by their own mothers here in the states but in Japan are revered as god-like creatures. It all depends on where you live and where you come from, what your influences are and what touches you personally and makes an impression.

So when you hear a one hit wonders or top songs list ignore the fact that your hair starts bristling on your arms, neck and ears over the injustice that you feel is being done to your favorite artist. Take a breath and remember that just because a song was huge in your country does not mean it was huge all over the world. Feel free to make your point that said band was more than a one hit wonder where you come from but also understand that it’s not necessarily so all over the world. Don’t take offense. Live and let live and remember that I’m not wrong, I’m not right, I’m just opinionated.
