Edit: Somehow the wrong file got uploaded so that has been fixed. Also, I am aware that I say episode 105 in the podcast. That is because after recording the file was unavailable to me and I had to do another episode in it's place. Perhaps I'll fix it one day in a bog brother overdub sort of way.

Ten For Tuesday Episode 103: Back Again

Sometimes things just don't work out the way you want them to. I had an episode almost ready and intended to upload it while I was on vacation in Peru but that didn't happen. First of all I got sick and then the wifi available to me was spotty at best. Even so I figured I'd just finish it once I returned home. That didn't happen either because shortly after coming home my laptop died and I haven't had the funds to try and get it fixed. Right now I have to beg time from my wife to use her laptop. Hopefully in the near future my situation will improve but if not, well, I'll just keep on going until it does. Income tax return days aren't too far off now are they? Enough of that, I've been a mood for music from a certain period of time, probably my favorite time of all, from around 1977 to 1982 or 1983 give or take. There was some great raw music created in that era. Sit back and enjoy because the next two episodes are almost done as well and there will be more of this to come.

Ten For Tuesday Episode 057

Once again this has come down to the wire, my wife has had me busy working on her projects. If you're single you won't understand but it comes with the deal. Luckily, I've had the idea for this episode for at least a  month so all I had to do was gather the music files and determine the order of songs. There's not a lot of talking which is a good thing, just ten great songs from the 80s and 90s that don't get any kind of airplay around here. In two weeks we'll see what kind of mood I'm in and what I can dredge up from my musical memories. Later.

Ten For Tuesday Episode 046: Back To The Late 70s and Early 80s

This weeks episode comes at you fast because I'm under the gun to get it out in time. Tuesday kind of rolled up on me quickly so last night after getting off of work I started gathering the songs and that is when the problems started. I couldn't find some of them and the digging and searching began. At any rate, that's all done and the show is ready. All of these songs were important to me in high school and college and no matter how much they get played I still love listening to them. Hopefully you'll like it too.

The Return of Beavis and Butthead?

I found out some of the best news I could get the other day. Beavis and Butthead are returning to MTV and no, I do not mean in reruns. Series creator Mike Judge has agreed to start creating and voicing new episodes of the dynamic duo. They'll still be the same age yet this time around not only will they watch music videos but also Youtube viral videos and other events like the Ultimate Fighting Championship as well as using modern technology. This is a no brainer unless the powers that be want to take the teeth out of them and actually have them liking people like Lady Ga-Ga instead of reviling her. I have so many fond memories of watching this show and honestly I think that most everybody knew somebody like this at some point in their lives. I'll even admit to owning a Burgerworld t-shirt at one point. I'll go even further, my roommates and I would imitate their voices for our answering machine.

This information came to me from a most unlikely source, Rolling Stone magazine. Somehow I have been receiving a subscription even though I never ordered it. This has happened to me several times in the past with different magazines. My wife thinks that I must be receiving it as a gift yet nobody has come forward to tell me that it was from them so I tend to disagree and instead believe that my name must be on some marketing list where they send you a free subscription and hope that you'll enjoy the magazine so much that you will want to renew your subscription when the time comes and that way they'll have you hooked and get your money. At least that's my working theory.

At any rate, I do not like Rolling Stone magazine very much. It just doesn't have the kind of content that I enjoy so when I received the most recent issue I left it untouched for a few days and then decided to throw it away. As I picked it up however three headlines caught my eye on the cover. First was a story about The Clash whose music I still enjoy. Second was Beavis and Butthead and the third was a story about The Cars and their album that will be coming out in May. That was enough for me to be enticed into opening it up and to read the stories and honestly I liked all of them.



However another thing that I hold against Rolling Stone is that publisher Jann Wenner is the bigshot in charge of bands that get inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame or should I say Shame? He has let personal biases interfere with many bands that more than meet the requirements for enshrinement and they end up being left out in the cold. Bands like Rush, Journey, The Cars, Devo, Kiss, Los Lobos, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Foreigner, Iron maiden and Judas Priest are so deserving yet still cannot make the cut. It's a sad reflection on Jann Wenner and his ilk who believe that they are smarter and cooler and hipper than anyone else when truthfully, they're just pale wannabes.

Ah, enough of this drudgery. I'm not here to endorse or condemn Rolling Stone (well, maybe condemn a little). Back to what's really important. Reading about The Clash = cool. Reading about The Cars new album coming out = great. Reading about Beavis and Butthead making their valiant return = fantastic. Maybe there's some hope for fun and happiness after all.

Devo - Something For Everybody out now

Devo released their new album titled Something For Everybody on June 15th and I just acquired it so expect to hear my thoughts soon. It's their first new album in 20 years.

Fridays - 80s TV Sketch Comedy

I really have been working on a legit post with actual social commentary but it's not ready yet so instead I thought I'd throw you some mindless fun from back in the day. Fridays was ABC's answer to Saturday Night Live in the early 80s but it only lasted a couple of seasons. One reason I preferred Fridays was for the varied and mostly unusual musical guests that they had, guests that weren't cool enough for Saturday Night Live like Devo, The Jim Carroll Band, The Cars, Scandal, Journey, AC/DC, The Stray Cats and so many more. Another reason was for the comedy that pushed the accepted boundaries of what was permissible to be shown on network tv. In reality the show was ahead of it's time and remarkable in what it was able to show.

This last clip only aired once because it was deemed to be extremely gory and violent. Upon subsequent reruns showings it was simply left out. Six ABC affiliates stopped airing the show completely as a result of the skit's depictions of zombie cannabalism. So of course it's considered a classic.

Saturday Videos

Well it's Saturday and we just got back from the laundromat so of course I'm looking back at some old 80s music that I used to (and still do) love so much. First up is Devo with their song Freedom Of Choice off of the album of the same name released in 1980. This is the Devo sound that I like the most, just enough guitar and enough synthesizer without either being overbearing.



Next up is The Go-Go's lead track Our Lips Are Sealed off of the Beauty And The Beat album released in 1981. It was the song that started everything off for them and peaked at number 20 on the Billboard Pop Singles chart.



Lastly we have a band from Downey, Ca called The Blasters featuring the Alvin brothers, Dave and Phil. The band was featured in the movies Streets of Fire and From Dusk Till Dawn. I'm Shakin' was off of their album The Blasters released in 1981. Dave left the band in 1986 but Phil has carried on the name in various incarnations ever since.



So there you have it, three very different bands from 1980-1981 however all are/were extremely good in the musical style they chose. All are highly recommended for you to check out and are more than a one trick pony.

12 Inch Singles # 2 AND Night Tracks or Night Flight?

I can tell that I'm getting old. Earlier I was thinking about a certain video from the early 80s and how I remembered watching it on a particular channel before I had ever laid eyes on MTV. Somehow I remembered that it was on the WTBS show Night Tracks around my sophomore year in high school however as I decided to do some fact checking before posting (a rare thing) and I found that it cannot have happened that way. The above mentioned show didn't air until 1989 which was about 7 years too late. I knew I had seen this video (and many others) on a show that aired on Fridays and Saturdays in the evenings but couldn't figure out what it was. At first top 40 or top 40 aspiring mainstream videos would be shown and as it got later in the evening you would see edgier, more alternative videos from artists like Devo, Iggy Pop and so forth. This was my favorite time to watch. Forget all of the mainstream garbage that was being pushed my way, no I went in for the different, unique and well, just downright odd groups. You have to know, I lived in a small town (pop. roughly 12,000) named Ironton in southeastern Ohio and wasn't near a larger city where you could get exposed to different kinds of music. I graduated high school in 1983 (in a different state) but attended my 20th high school reunion in Ironton and most of the people wanted to listen to disco so that should be all the explanation you need about what living in that place was like. Still, it was better than the town that I ended up graduating from.

At any rate the band I was thinking about was The English Beat and the video was for the song "Save It For Later." It was so immensely different than the music on local radio or what I heard anybody else listening to that it made a distinct impression on me and to this day it stills brings a smile to my face when I hear it.



Now after doing some actual research I think the show was actually Night Flight on the USA network and since the name is so similar I'm sure you can understand my confusion. It started in 1982 (my sophomore year) a few months before MTV aired and from all accounts it seems like it should be the one. Of course I also used to hear groups on the tv show Fridays which got called a rip off of Saturday Night Live but it didn't matter to me. They featured artists playing in a live setting like The Jim Carroll Band, The Plasmatics, Devo and so on that Saturday Night Live would never touch. Of course, that's another story.

Devo have a new song out

Okay, apparently Devo played at the Winter Olympics a few days ago (I haven't paid much attention to the Olympics so I missed it) and played their new song "Fresh" and then made it available to download for free for a limited time. Of course now plenty of other sites have put the mp3 up as well so it's available if you look around. Personally I think it sounds very good although when it started I wasn't so sure but a little bit in a knew it was a keeper. Devo is one of the top bands/artists on my never before seen concert wish list so perhaps I can eliminate them from the list if they tour this summer to support their new cd that comes out in May. One can only hope and pray that they'll be somewhere close by.
