New Podcast Episode: Ten For Tuesday 043
This is another of those Ipod podcasts. I'm not trying to be so silly as if to make everybody believe that I just turned it on and hit shuffle and these ten songs came up in this order. No, several of them did and I wrote them down, then I'd skip a few for various reasons like I've already played them on Ten For Tuesday before or they just didn't seem to fit. Pretty soon I had the ten songs and the order of procession came rather quickly afterwards. I actually had the entire thing done and ready to upload by at least four days ahead of time. That never happens. As for the next episode, well I've already got nine songs selected and am waiting for a tenth to make itself known. Strange feeling, this being ahead of the game. On to the music:
Bad Religion - Only Rain
Rat City Riot - Signs Of Distress
Chris Murray & The Slackers - Rastaman Rock
Radio 4 - Everything's In Question
Jaya The Cat - Two Ships Passing
Matt Mays & El Torpedo - Ain't So Heavy
Sugar - Believe What You're Saying
Paul Westerberg - Waiting On Somebody
School Of Fish - Unrecognizable
The Godfathers - Cause I Said So

A Paul Westerberg Quote Sparks A Song

While reading the book "Our Band Could Be Your Life" by Michael Azerrad I started the section on The Replacements and came across this quote from Paul Westerberg: "Sometimes you don't want to be creative. You just want to be normal and not have to worry, or think, or write." Of course it got me thinking and my creative mode kicked in so in about fifteen minutes I came up with these lyrics. My plan is to give them to two different friends who write lyrics and see much they change, maybe even get two songs with a similar core but they become totally different. Then if only I could get them recorded, even lo-fi would be fine and all would be well with my world.
Grow Up Somewhere
Nothing to do no place to go
Always driving down the same road
Staring at all the pretty girls
We're never gonna talk to
This night ends the same as the last
Always looking for the big blast
Sometimes I just wish I could
Turn normal like all the rest
Are these supposed to be the happy years
This time filled by all the pain and fears
Take me away from this one horse town
Take me away from all this running around
I know something is in me better than this
So take me away before I take me down
Walking up and down the same old halls
Same old faces mock and haunt me
Looking at the life I know I’ll never have
Not sure I’d want it all anyway
This day drags on like all the rest
Waiting for the thing to relieve the stress
Don’t tell me things will get better
When will my future become my life
It's not easy when you don't grow up somewhere

12 Inch Singles - The Replacements "Kiss Me On The Bus"

This is the next in the series of 12 inch singles that I bought on that fateful day in 1986. The Replacements are one of those underground bands that never reached massive popularity yet had a powerful influence on other people forming their own bands and putting out original music. "Kiss Me On The Bus" was on the album Tim that came out in 1985 and was the bands first major label release. It also was the last time that the original lineup was to record together as guitarist Bob Stinson was kicked out of the band shortly after the albums release. It received critical acclaim but had at best moderate commercial success. The band officially broke up in 1991 but by then Chris Mars and Bob Stinson were already out of the band.
Okay as a bonus here's the song from the same album that still gets played on college radio today, "Left Of The Dial." Just for fun because it's a great song.
