notmovingpictures Episode 077: Vamos Peru Carajo!

Peru qualifies for the World Cup, I'm working on lyrics for a new song and I tell a tale of being too young to buy beer. Don't judge me and certainly don't do what I did. I was young and stupid, what's your excuse?

A Post That's Not About A Podcast?

It's been a while since any music has been forthcoming but that may be changing in the near future. About two weeks ago Aaron sent me some music that he is working on and after listening to on repeat finally a clear lyrical direction came to me. In my case I have to think through what the music makes me feel and figure out where to take it. Once I understand it the ideas began to flow.

What started off as just a line or two evolved onto much more. It isn't finished by a long shot but the next step will be to take what I've written and start fitting it to the structure of the song. More than likely this first part will be too long and may need to be broken up but it is a start. Once I know where I am I can look to see where the lyrics will go in order to get to the finish.

Afterwards I think I'll ask Aaron to create something for this other idea that I've had for some time. Speaking strictly from a subject matter viewpoint it will be miles away from this current project. I have some days I need to take off from work before the end of the year due to the company's "use it or lose it" vacation rules so perhaps with some effort on my part we could be on our way to at least two new songs.

You never know what the future holds. All I know for sure is it feels good to be creating.

If my voice sounds a bit off it's because I'm fighting a cold that was contracted during my trip home to see my family. That's what this episode is about, going back to a familiar place to spend an all too little amount of time with family. That concept seems to be getting more important to me the older that I get.

Ten For Tuesday Episode 135: Two From Tom Petty

Tom Petty died recently so it only seems fitting to start off with two songs that I really like from him and The Heartbreakers. Some of the other songs have connections to him and the band. Some don't. I just felt like playing them together and I think they make a rather cool sounding episode.

notmovingpictures Episode 71: It's Not About The Anthem Or The Flag Geniuses

My thought was this would be another episode with Gary but then I got into an online beef with a cousin I haven't seen in decades. He's a hard line conservative who refuses to accept anything other than his own view and I wasn't having it. The thing that brought it all on was our poor excuse for a president concentrating on NFL players protesting instead of more serious matters. So yeah, it's gonna be one of those kind of episodes. I lay my view all out. It is what it is.

Photo Album: Prong, Sepultura and Testament, Gas Monkey Live, Dallas 7 April, 2017

Earlier this year Tommy, Chris, Robbie and I took a thrash road trip to Dallas and here are a few crappy pictures to prove it:

Prong was worth taking the trip all by themselves. I think they really impressed Tommy, Chris and Robbie who had talked about it not being a bad thing if they didn't get to see them. Their tune changed very quickly once Prong took the stage.

Sepultura was a band that I only ever listened to a few songs in their catalog. They had to be seen live for me to get them. I'll go again if I get the chance.

Testament played for so long I just got tired and wanted the show to be over. Nothing against them or their playing, it was just too much at that point. My feet hurt, my knees hurt and my back hurt. That's what happens when you get old.

There was a fourth band that opened but since I didn't care for them I won't be mentioning their name. Okay, I actually don't remember their name right now so that should tell you something.

notmovingpictures Episode 069: Gary's Return Part Two

This is part two of my conversation with my brother-in-law Gary. In this episode we talk about going to the Curtis Armstrong Slumber Party at the Circle Cinema to see three of the five 80s movies that were shown. We saw Revenge Of The Nerds, Better Off Dead and Just One Of The Guys before giving in to the lure of sleep. We also discourse on politics and how much easier Spanish is to pronounce than English all while being interrupted by my wife and a very hungry kitten.

notmovingpictures Episode 067: Don't Take It Easy

I recorded this episode on my laptop using Audacity and I'm not entirely happy with the results but it is what it is and I cleaned it up the best I could. A few hours ago I got the news that my mother had another major heart attack so I scrapped what I had already recorded and did this instead. It's just how I feel at this particular moment. notmovingpictures Episode 66: No Place In My Heart For Nazis

This is a volatile topic I felt I had to speak out on. I tend to wait for perspective after an event like what happened in Charlottesville but also because the story keeps constantly evolving, especially when you have a President who likes to hear himself talk.....or tweet or whatever.

There is a racial epithet spoken as I share a moment that happened while I was in the U.S. Army. I felt it was important to show that racism exists in our military and feel that I can only do that by sharing the exact words that were spoken to me by another service member. He thought I would agree with his opinion. I did not.

Where do we go from here?

notmovingpictures Episode 063: Vacation You Say?

So I lied, I wasn't able to sit down with my brother-in-law after all and it's another solo episode. Sue me. I'm at the point where I believe it'll happen when it's supposed to happen and not a minute before. In the meantime here's me talking about the resistance I've been feeling and Steven Pressfield and a sudden inspiration for me to write issue three of Exercising Demons. Eventually of course. Oh yeah, I went on vacation, lost my keys and cracked the screen on my phone twice. All true.

Zine Nation Review Issue Two Of Exercising Demons

Earlier today I got news of a pleasant surprise. The last time I reviewed some zines for zine nation I sent them a copy of issue two of my zine Exercising Demons and it now has been reviewed on their site. The review is very kind indeed to my eyes and has now brought what was a simmering desire to write another issue into a full blown inferno. I've left things undone for far too long. First I need to finish my review of the last batch of zines that were sent to me and submit it and then I can concentrate on issue three.

It's been known to my mind what the subject will be even as though I wondered if I should write that topic. I can't wait to get going. So for now how about following the link (so that their site gets the traffic) and scroll down a little to read what someone else says about my writing skills or lack thereof. http://bit.ly/2tYYTr2 Come on, it's time better spent than on another of those boring "What 80s band would you be" tests or their like on Facebook. Help ,me out here.

Photo Album: The Supersuckers @ The Shrine, Tulsa

Here's a somewhat murky shot of The Supersuckers who played at the venue Shrine here in Tulsa on December 16th, 2016. It was a raucous, energetic show and a nice early Christmas gift to me, from me.

notmovingpictures Episode 062: Tough Guys

As I listened to a podcast interview of Kevin Cronin it made me realize that Hi Infidelity was the first full rock lp that I can remember owning so I talk about that and Mira Sorvino. Listen and you will understand why. Oh and the band whose name I couldn't remember was Survivor.

notmovingpictures Episode 061: Who Was Your First?

Listening to the latest episode of Henry Rollins podcast (Henry and Heidi) got me thinking and that inspired this episode. First up I talk about who the first band I saw was and then who my first "real" concert was. There is a difference. Then it's on to who my son has chosen his first "real" concert to be. Hint, looking like Deep Purple and Alice Cooper. Understand though that he has been in the presence of musicians plying their trade before. There are various other musical meanderings muttered by me so take a listen and enjoy.

Photo Album: The Slackers @ The Vanguard, Tulsa 24 April, 2015

It had been at least fifteen of sixteen years since I had seen The Slackers so imagine my surprise when I found out they were coming to Tulsa. Back in the day I was able to interview one of them (Agent J?) in Huntington, WV and I still have the tape buried away somewhere. Perhaps when I get another room in the house to use as my office I can dig all of that stuff out and upload it. The Slackers always put on a great show and do not disappoint. I just hope it doesn't take that long before I get to see them again.

notmovingpictures Episode 60: Wrong Again

On the return trip from seeing X in Oklahoma City I managed to not record Tommy and I talking about the show really, but did catch us talking about remembering setlists from bands we've seen, going to a show alone, older albums with filler, Sammy Hagar, Eddie Van Halen, Neal Schon and an 80s movie that I thought couldn't be made again. Plus Tommy's really wrong about a couple of things, as usual.

Photo Album: Local H @ The Shrine, Tulsa, 9 April, 2017

This was the first time for me seeing Local H and all I can say is I hope there will be many more occurrences. Just two people playing stripped rock and roll yet with a very full sound that does not suffer from having no bass player, no second guitarist, not even a keyboard player. My friend Aaron has sung praises for catching Local H live for many years to me and finally I had the chance and listened to him. Call me converted now. I am a fan and can't wait until they come somewhere close again. I will travel to see them, they are that good.

notmovingpictures Episode 057: Road Trip Talk

Finally Tommy has returned! As promised this episode comes from the recent road trip to Dallas on our way to see Testament, Sepultura and Prong. Be forewarned, this was recorded in Tommy's truck with Chris and Robbie in the back so there is a lot of noise but that cannot be avoided. Luckily it's not too bad. As usual we talk about politics, especially those here in Oklahoma, specifically how the elected officials in this state have decided that they know what's best for the people, so they can ignore what was voted on.

We talk about the bureaucracy that is the U.S. government, what's wrong with the medical insurance here (i.e. we have no real choices) and once again how marijuana should be legalized and what a complete joke Scott Pruitt is. All that and more, plus we also recorded another episode on the way back home the next day which will be coming soon.

Photo Album: Roddy Radiation 5/7/2015 Boulevard Trash Tulsa

Excited wasn't strong enough of a word for how I felt when I found out that guitarist Roddy Radiation (Byers) from the legendary 2Tone ska band The Specials was going to be in Tulsa. This was a must see show as far as I was concerned. I had actually had a picture taken with him on the Warped Tour in 1998 with the version of The Specials that was touring at that time. One of these days I'll get it scanned and show it here. I thought about mentioning it to him because he was very accessible in the small space that was Boulevard Trash but ultimately decided to let him be. It's not as if he would remember the few seconds that he took with me considering all that he was done in his life. Seeing him perform in this setting was more than enough for me.

notmovingpictures Episode 056: Roadtripping

I promise new episodes are coming with Tommy. As a matter of fact I am editing them now but in the meantime I felt like talking about music so here you go. Another episode of me rambling along about the recent concerts I've seen and those that are upcoming. Names like Prong, Sepultura, Testament, Local H have been seen and those like X, Alice Cooper, Megadeth and Scorpions are all on the schedule amongst others. Once again there is talk about wanting to do new music because I have a ton of lyrical ideas sitting and waiting but also about trying to learn to play a little guitar. It's not too long of an episode so go ahead and check it out.

Photo Album: Alejandro Escovedo June 11th, 2014 The Vanguard

In an effort to put content on this blog other than info on my podcast episodes I've decided to start uploading pictures from anything that strikes my fancy, so long as it's from something I've done or seen, with some info tacked on as well. At least this will fill the gaps until I feel like writing the odd short story, lyrics, bunch of crap, etc. Who better to start things off than one of my favorite musicians?

This photo was taken from the fourth time that I have seen Al in concert. Unlike the previous three shows there was no band backing him this time. It was just Al, his guitar and violinist Susan Voelz. The stories were there, spun in between songs, but the songs themselves had changed. A different energy had been given to them with no difference in the brilliance of the performance, it was if the songs lived, even breathed and adapted to the circumstances. That's part of his talent. I missed seeing him this past November right before my birthday but I won't make that mistake again.

notmovingpictures Episode 055: Conclusion Of The Conversation With Aaron

In the fourth and final installment of my conversation with my friend Aaron we again are talking about music. This time it's about party bands, you know, the kind where people just want to hear something familiar without any concern for content. Then Aaron starts talking guitars (he's got fifteen) and how he started experimenting with altering them. After that we talk about music keeping you young and then the guitar nerdery returns with talk about recording and editing skills and how we earned them. It all closes up with some social media etiquette or at least how we do it and with that this chapter closes. However I have a feeling that once we records some new music another conversation will be had.

notmovingpictures Episode 054: Aaron Part 3

Part three of my conversation with my friend Aaron finds us continuing to talk about Metallica and selling out, the line you can choose to not cross when a band changes their sound too much, cover songs, gaming and how it can bring family and friends a bit closer when separated by time and distance and movies like Star Wars: Rogue One, the Bladerunner sequel and Highlander. I mean the first one not the crappy second one. Probably some other stuff I missed too.

A Trip To Josey's Records New Tulsa Store

Last Saturday a rare window of time and opportunity emerged for me. To take advantage of it, meaning to do something that would satisfy my personal needs, I targeted the newly opened branch of Josey's Records here in Tulsa. It's extremely rare that I have any kind of time to go crate digging these days what with family, work and other personal projects and understandably I leapt at the chance. Plus I finally had some expendable cash so I didn't have to worry about spending it on something that might be considered frivolous.

My favorite place to buy vinyl and zines here in Tulsa was Holy Mountain but unfortunately it had closed down very recently and I had been unable to even go visit the store one last time. The good news is that Jay, the owner of Holy Mountain, now works for Josey's and Jay is the type of guy who remembers regular customers and what they like. That's a rarity these days. There was no other place in Tulsa that offered what Holy Mountain had, nothing even came close and I worried about that.

When I arrived to Josey's the first order of business was to walk around the aisles to get a feel for the place. Even though the space is renovated and has a clean, crisp look to it, still, there was the smell that I immediately noticed. The smell of old records I mean and I breathed that smell in for several minutes as I just walked around and taking in what selection they had. That smell is a good thing by the way. It's an odor that conveys comfort to me.

Having taken the atmosphere in I chose a random section of the rock alphabet and got to work. Time slipped away and lost all meaning as I flipped through the bins with my head down. Slowly but surely I began to gather a few albums at a time and would periodically journey over to the listening station (comprised of three record players with headphones) and see what I had found. Not all of them made the cut but I was beginning to find some gems.

After several trips to the listening station what emerged was a pattern of music from 1978 to 1985. That appeared to be what I was focusing on even though when I had arrived I had no clear idea of what I would be looking for. When I had begun my search I had a thought of just buying a few things but by now I realized that I had almost enough music for a podcast episode of Ten For Tuesday so I dug in and continued to search. I mean why stop short right? Better to make it happen at this point. Go big or go home or insert your own overused cliche as needed.

Eventually I realized that I had been there for close to three hours and knew that I needed to pay up and run some errands before my wife started calling asking where I was. What I ended up with was two albums I had owned on cassette back in the day, two from artists whose music I had listened to and liked, a German compilation of Australian bands and three from bands I had never heard of before. Check out the complete list at the end of the column and wait for the podcast episode in about a month or so. Hey, it takes time to digitize music and it's not like I don't already have enough music already prepared for seven episodes waiting to go. This one will probably leapfrog most of them though. Probably.

Red Rockers - Schizophrenic Circus 1984
Scandal - Self Titled EP 1982
Raging Fire - A Family Thing 1985
Rock Paket - Australien 1982
Tuff Darts - Self Titled 1978
Any Trouble - Where Are All The Nice Girls 1980
The Police - Reggatta de Blanc 1979
Jason & The Scorchers - Lost & Found 1985

notmovingpictures Episode 53: Concerts, Flooding In Peru and Kola Inglesa

I decided to throw together a brief episode to offer a break from my conversation with Aaron. Do not fear, there is more to come on that front, and soon. For if you choose you can hear me rambling on about my computer situation addressed, the flooding situation going on in Peru and my recent family trip that ended up at Pops, a cultural spot on Route 66 and some upcoming concerts I'd like to attend. Oh yeah, and the idea that I could be working on new music in the near future. Now excuse me while I get back to watching Jason Bourne.

Ten For Tuesday Episode 110

There are a few concerts I hope to attend in the coming months, the first of which is Prong, Sepultura and Testament, none of which I have ever seen before. That was enough to be the impetus for this episode. There's a lot of thrash going on in this one, hope you can stomach it. I can.

notmovingpictures Episode 052: Aaron Hlusko part 2

Part two of my conversation with Aaron is all about music. First we talk about the songs we have done then venture into the reality of how some bands can change their songs as time goes by and have their fans be perfectly okay with it while others cannot. As well, some bands can experiment with different ideas and sounds while others remain trapped in what they have created. Strange how this happens. Rush, Iron Maiden, Smashing Pumpkins, Twisted Sister and more get discussed. I also offer up my definition of what hair metal really is/was. Finally, we delve into the idea of selling out and the episode ends in mid thought of Metallica. Do not fear, it will continue on in part three.

notmovingpictures Episode 051: Aaron Hlusko part 1

A few weeks ago I sat down with my friend Aaron and I recorded over three hours of our conversation. This is the first part. Aaron is the guy who plays the music that I put my lyrics to, so of course we started off talking about music, specifically some upcoming concerts in our area. That led to talking about drunks, Aaron's hometown of Huntington, WV, work and then we cycled back to music, this time our stuff. Music is a theme in life that we share albeit in different ways.

notmovingpictures Episode 050: Can You Define What Fake News Is?

Once more I journey into the land of the solo episode where I ponder on upcoming changes at work, reviewing zines for zinenation.org, the alien idea that the only political party a Christian can belong to is Republican, the false idea that God loves the U.S. better than the rest of the world and the truth that Donald Trump doesn't know what fake news means.

You will hear punk, ska, rock, Americana, metal, country, rockabilly and more from all over the world. It doesn't matter if it's a major label or indie as long as I like it then it gets played. The motto is Less Talk More Music which means you won't hear me waxing poetic for fifteen minutes between songs. At TFT its all about the music...and me of course.

notmovingpictures Episode 049: Four Years Of This Crap?

The focus of this episode is the Executive Orders and the Presidential Memorandums that Donald Trump made in roughly his first week as President. The lesson I learned in recording this episode is to be better prepared. Notes are fine and all but a good outline would have made it go so much smoother. As it was I had to do a ton of editing and since I was under a time constraint I can only hope I made my points in a somewhat sensible order. The thing is though, not one day after I recorded it Trump and his cabinet of imbeciles have made what I talked about seem tame in comparison. Can we really survive four years of this? Only time will tell.

Ten For Tuesday Episode: Episode 106

Edit: Somehow the wrong file got uploaded so that has been fixed. Also, I am aware that I say episode 105 in the podcast. That is because after recording the file was unavailable to me and I had to do another episode in it's place. Perhaps I'll fix it one day in a bog brother overdub sort of way.

This is yet another continuation of episode 103, the third in a row featuring music from the late 70s to the early 80s and it's just more great music. This time I opted to only speak once at the very beginning so you got that going for ya.

Devo - Beautiful World
Wall Of Voodoo - Mexican Radio
Elvis Costello - Watching The Detectives
The Specials - A Message To You, Rudy
The Police - Message In A Bottle
The Cars - Just What I Needed
INXS - Don't Change
The Fixx - Stand Or Fall
Midnight Oil - Dead Heart
The Ruts - Staring At The Rude Boys

notmovingpictures Episode 048: Mass Shootings and Back Tracking On Campaign Promises

I was up late, my mind on several things, so I decided to go ahead and record something at the risk of sounding sleep deprived and not very lucid. Normally when news breaks I give it some time for things to settle down before I weigh in. That way some of the hype has died down and a modicum of common sense can be appreciated. Sometimes. On this night though I felt like talking about the Ft Lauderdale Airport shooting as well as Donald Trump backing out of another of his campaign promises, as was to be expected. He's a conman who tricked his way into the presidency. He just told bigger lies than the career politicians.

Ten For Tuesday Episode 105

I had plans to have this episode ready so that I could upload it while I was in Peru. That didn't happen thanks to less than dependable Wi-Fi, tourist illness and a lot of other things. But now I am back in the U.S. and hopefully the illness is behind me so it's time to catch up on everything I've left waiting in the wings. The good news is I got a ton of Peruvian punk and metal while down there so soon I'll be digitizing it for future episodes. As for this one, well it's an eclectic mix so show it some love, alright?

The Black Black - The Plan Is There Is No Plan
Low Fat Getting High - No More Feeling
The Zig Zags - Sunken City
Chuck Prophet - Alex Nieto
The Smithereens - Sorry
Teenage Fanclub - Loves Taken Over
Soul Asylum - When I See You
Bob Mould - Hanging Tree
Erica Freas - Please Go Walk In The Rain
Colin Hay - I Want You Back

Staring At The Stars

Charles, Tommy and me, the three of us decided to get an apartment together while in college. Tommy knew Charles from high school, they graduated in the same class and though I knew Charles I didn’t really know him. Tommy well, that was another thing entirely. He was my best friend, my brother from other parents. I was two years ahead of both of them and had spent those two years off and on in college occasionally going to class.

The place we found to live in was in the southern part of Tahlequah just off of highway 62. There was a small cluster of one story apartments, two to a building, all around each other and we got one with a standard three month lease. On the other side of us were these girls from Tri-Sigma sorority whom I passively tried to impress by playing my music loud and by laying on the hood of Tommy’s car at night where I would stare at the stars. I was young and dumb, what do you expect?

The question to ask though is did it work? Did I impress them? Since they never spoke to me or even acknowledged my existence I would say no. Overall the Tri-Sigs were known to be a bit stuck up so perhaps it wasn’t totally an indication of my lack of importance on the social scale. Yeah, I can’t even keep a straight face as I type that bull. I wasn’t anybody that mattered in their world. I was just a nothing occasionally seen but never heard.

My personality consisted of being a nervous bundle of insecurity with a bad self-image and very low self-esteem. A single “Hi” from one of them would have made my year.  A smile accompanying that “Hi” would have had me walking on heights I’d never known. They didn’t owe me anything of course and that is exactly what they gave. After all these years I cannot recall any of their names but I’m sure I knew who they were then.

But those nights spent on the hood of Tommy’s car, now they were worth remembering. Staring at the stars made me realize how small and insignificant we all were in the grand scheme of things. It wasn’t just me feeling the way I did. Somewhere else another person could be having the same thoughts, doubts and dreams as me. Those stars and the night sky made anything seem possible. Childhood sci-fi dreams lived on in my vivid imagination as I stared upward. The future was infinite. Maybe there was somebody out there that would actually like me for me. I’m talking of the female persuasion here.

What wasn’t infinite however was our time in that apartment. Before the three month lease was up Charles deserted Tommy and me. He found a better deal I guess. Tommy and I ended up moving into a two bedroom cabin with our friends Gary and Chris in a speed trap little speck of a town west of Tahlequah named Hulbert. It turned out to be a better deal for us too. No rent or utilities and only a minor infestation of field mice. And when I say minor I’m understating it on a grand level but it was okay considering everything else.

That part of Tahlequah we lived in is very different today. The city expanded and grew and that little area disappeared, consumed by the ever growing hunger of big business and the expanding economy of a college town. Where we spent those three short months no longer exists except in my memories. I wonder if anybody else who lived there remembers that place. Even if it is just an occasional thought every few years or so, it still counts.
