notmovingpictures Episode 047: Racist, False News and The President Elect

Finally I decided to speak my mind on what has been going on in this country with the Presidential election and the fallout from it as well as the mindframe of the citizenry. I do like to wait for the initial uproar to die down and gather the facts before delving into any kind of subject. Believe me, this one is rough. People have lost their collective minds on both sides of the fence. Insanity rules and will likely do so for at least four years. But what do I know, right? Just my opinion.

Ten For Tuesday Episode 104

Continuing on from the musical direction of episode 103 comes ten more great songs from my favorite era of music to listen to, 1977-1983-ish. So much amazing music was created so be sure to check back often, more episodes to come, especially if I can get my laptop fixed and recover a ton of music. I can only hope.

The Go-Go's - Get Up And Go
Surf Punks - My Beach
X - The Have Nots
Sex Pistols - Holiday In The Sun
Elvis Costello - Radio Radio
The Clash - Should I Stay Or Should I Go
Talking Heads - Once In A Lifetime
The English Beat - Stand Down Margaret
The Police - Canary In A Coalmine
The Jam - Going Underground

Ten For Tuesday is a podcast dedicated to playing the music I couldn't find anywhere else. The music I like varies from style to style, genre to genre and era to era. You will hear punk, ska, rock, Americana, metal, country, rockabilly and more from all over the world. It doesn't matter if it's a major label or indie as long as I like it then it gets played. The motto is Less Talk More Music which means you won't hear me waxing poetic for fifteen minutes between songs. At TFT its all about the music...and me of course.

Ten For Tuesday Episode 103: Back Again

Sometimes things just don't work out the way you want them to. I had an episode almost ready and intended to upload it while I was on vacation in Peru but that didn't happen. First of all I got sick and then the wifi available to me was spotty at best. Even so I figured I'd just finish it once I returned home. That didn't happen either because shortly after coming home my laptop died and I haven't had the funds to try and get it fixed. Right now I have to beg time from my wife to use her laptop. Hopefully in the near future my situation will improve but if not, well, I'll just keep on going until it does. Income tax return days aren't too far off now are they? Enough of that, I've been a mood for music from a certain period of time, probably my favorite time of all, from around 1977 to 1982 or 1983 give or take. There was some great raw music created in that era. Sit back and enjoy because the next two episodes are almost done as well and there will be more of this to come.

Adam & The Ants - Desperate But Not Serious
Devo - Girl U Want
Blondie - Hanging On The Telephone
The English Beat - Mirror In The Bathroom
Oingo Boingo - Dead Man's Party
Billy Idol - Rebel Yell
U2 - I Will Follow
The Police - So Lonely
The Cars - Let's Go
The Go-Go's - Turn To You

notmovingpictures Episode 46: My Peruvian Vacation

This episode was recorded on September 30th, the last day of my Peruvian vacation. Not long after I returned home I had almost all of the podcast edited and planned on finishing it the next day and then uploading it. Except then my laptop died. Everything on it has been unavailable including all of my saved episodes, my music, pictures, documents, etc and quite realistically it all may be lost for good. Luckily I still had the file on my recorder and so I was able to use a computer and download the editing program and start over. Since I want to get this up I have decided not to do any editing on the content. Normally I will take out too many uhhhs or if I cough or sniffle because I feel it distracts from what was being said. Not this time though. What we have here is a conversation between myself and my brother-in-law Gary Rivera. Gary was preparing to emigrate to the U.S. and we talked about the differences in our countries as well as what I did on my vacation. Since this was recorded in Peru and is a great deal about Peru I decided to close the episode with some Peruvian metal. Enjoy.

New Zines: What She Said and Badly Drawn....On Purpose issue 2

This is way overdue but since my laptop died a lot of things have been left hanging and will more than likely continue to do so until I am able to get a new one. The likelihood of that happening soon doesn't look good so until this is resolved I'll just do what I can.

I've had two mini-zines ready and although I left a few in various places while on vacation in Peru and mailed them to certain friends it's high time I got rid of them so in the next few days I'll be taking them to the library and perhaps a book store or two to drop them off. If they happen to find themselves placed inside of books to be found at a later date at said locations well, it won't be the end of the world now will it? As well, I need to drop a few off at Holy Mountain now that they've moved to their temporary location.

For the first time ever I've submitted a short story to a zine but I'll leave it at that until I hear if it was accepted or not. If so then I'll gladly trumpet the info as well as buy a bunch of issues to keep for prosperity's sake and if not then I have a magazine in mind to submit to. If neither entity chooses to publish it then I'll just have to put it in the next issue of Exercising Demons. I'm extremely well behind in writing issue 3 but like I said, no laptop and that makes it hard to write. Don't ask me how I'm able to work on this post, I can't give away the details on my trickery.

Other than that, I went to see Black Sabbath so if I am able I'll put a few pictures up. I intend to see Henry Rollins later in the month so there might be a blog post all about that. There is this little thing next week where I'm turning......well let's just say another year older and leave it at that, shall we? I'm old and that's all that needs to be said about that.

Some Zine reviews For Zinenation.org

A few months back the fine folks at Zine Nation sent me four zines to review and so finally I have done them and they can now be viewed on their site here. In this case I'd like the traffic to go to their website so I will not put the reviews up on the blog. Indulge me a bit and go to their site. It's kind of the point you know?

As for revealing the zines that I reviewed I can at least let you know what they were. No harm in doing that. They were Uten Ord # 3, Exscind, Simple Steps To A Life Less Shitty and I Don't Know Hot To Help You.

There you have it. Go read my reviews and you can find out more info on the zines and while you're at it you can poke around their site and find reviews done by other people who are far better at it than I, as well as interviews with people in the zine world.

Gotta go, can't let the chicken burn and the rice is almost ready.

notmovingpictures Episode 045: Do You Really Know What Freedom Means?

Yet another solo episode. Patience, soon I will have episodes with co-hosts. Soon I tell you. This time I talk about dismantling my office, my to-do list for projects, etc. that need to get finished before I go on my vacation. Then it's on to the serious topic. Protests that occur by not standing for the national anthem and/or flag burning and the publics reaction. My take on this issue is unconventional. I've seen a lot in my time in the military and since. I bet you won't be able to guess what my point of view is. Listen and see.

My To Do List Is Getting Kind Of Long

My to do list is getting longer and longer as my impending vacation looms large. I've always been a very good procrastinator, damn near a champion at it as a matter of fact. Need proof? Well in college I would wait until about ten o'clock the night before I had to give a speech for class to start on it. I always got an A on those speeches I'll have you know. Here's the list so far in no particular order but it doesn't include family, house or work stuff, i.e. the-not-so-fun stuff:

Get two episodes of Ten For Tuesday ready
Get one or two episodes of notmovingpictures ready
Make issue two of Badly Drawn.....On Purpose zine
Make issue three of Exercising Demons zine
Make issue one of What She Said zine
Make issue one of Crap I Used To Draw zine
Write and post book review of The Folly of Loving Life by Monica Drake (long overdue)
Write and submit zine reviews for Zine Nation
Re-write short story Lonely Life (just a working title)
Work on t-shirt design ideas
Pack for my vacation
Finish other preparations for my vacation (lists of gifts to buy, etc)

Perhaps I just thrive on getting things done at the last minute. That's what I've done here. I could have gotten serious with these zines weeks ago but no, I don't do things that way. More than likely I'll get three of them done which is good since the Tulsa Zine Fest is the week after I get back from my vacation and I'd like to have it all done before that. Which ones though, that's the question.

The zine and book review won't take very long as I've been mulling them over in my head for some time now. The music for both episodes of Ten For Tuesday is almost ready and there's a loose plan for notmovingpictures. The short story re-write will have to wait until I get some more feedback from family and friends. After that, well, things will just have to fall into place now won't they? They always seem to whether I like it or not.

notmovingpictures Episode 044: Should I Stay Or Should I Go

So this is the kind of an episode where I ramble on about how I've been trying to schedule a vacation in Peru and the thoughts or doubts I have about getting a medical scan to see if I may have a potentially bad (or not) medical condition and how all of the waiting makes me think about life. You can hear how all of this ties together and affects each other. Then I delve into the Peruvian Presidential election and our very own election here in the U.S. Lastly I discuss some zine projects that I need to get done before I go to Peru and some reviews I am doing for Zine Nation.

Extra points for you if you get the connection to the closing song and one of the themes for this episode.

The Waiting Game

Waiting sucks. Not matter what it is you are waiting for the eternal truth is that waiting sucks. What I'm waiting for right now is for the three hours necessary for my DAT Scan to begin to pass. I'm in a hospital I've never been in before, in a city I'm unfamiliar with, by myself, as I wait. Perfect scenario right? I've had my solution to drink and the tracker injected but then three hours must pass before the scan can begin. I'm not always the most patient of people so waiting for this time to pass sucks.

If you're wondering what this DAT Scan is for well, where do I start? My older sister has Parkinson's Disease so when I was describing to her how I sometimes had a bit of shaking in my hands she advised me to get it checked out, not much later as I tend to do things, but now. So I got a referral to a Neurologist who assured me that I only had Essential Tremors which is nothing to worry about. Relieved I called her to let her know, only to find out that was exactly what she had been told as well. Only she didn't have Essential Tremors, she had Parkinson's.

Luckily there was a movement specialist in Tulsa and I was able to get in to see him for a second opinion, after waiting about four months that is. Unlike the neurologist he wasn't willing to write off what I have as Essential Tremors. It might be, then again it might not be. Turns out there are a lot of possibilities. So the movement specialist got this DAT Scan thing setup which will tell me definitively if it is Essential Tremors. If it isn't then.....well, we'll cross that bridge if and when we come to it.

It's been over eight months since this whole ordeal started. One wait after another. A little more time to pass and then the scan will be over. Then some more waiting to hear the results. After that I have no idea what will happen. If I'm being honest (and why shouldn't I be) Parkinson's scares the crap out of me. There are so many ideas and stories and things swirling around in my brain and the thought that I could have something that would slowly take away my ability to write or type or somehow bring these stories to life, is terrifying.

I haven't taken advantage of the time I've had in my life to do these things as I feel driven to do. If it's typical to wait until you have a scare or a close call or some kind of worry to get off your butt and actually do those things you've always wanted to do, then I guess that describes me to a T. I'm a very good procrastinator but if I continue to put things off 'til later then eventually there will no longer be a later. I only hope that's not the case and I do have more time it let it all out. We'll see.

Ten For Tuesday Episode 100: Yeah, It's 100

For episode 100 I'm doing nothing special, just continuing to bring you ten great songs. Most of these are recent songs from artists that were around in the late 70s to early 80s. Most but not all. The rest just sound like they were influenced by them. All in all this is a great episode in my humble opinion. Deal with it.

Rhoda Dakar and Nick Welsh - Let Me Go
The Beat feat. Ranking Roger - Walking On The Wrong Side
The Selecter - It Never Worked Out
Bruce Foxton (From The Jam) - Smash The Clock
Paul Weller - Wake Up The Nation
3 Men + Black - That's Entertainment
Hugh Cornwell - Please Don't Put Me On A Slow Boat To Trowbridge
We Were Promised Jetpacks - Quiet Little Voices
The Twilight Sad - Last January

New Song By Stationary Nomads - A Mind Is A Terrible Thing

I have a new song uploaded at bandcamp called A Mind Is A Terrible Thing which you can download for free or just stream it. It's a spoken word style vocal delivery and I had the idea for at least the last few years. Aaron had sent me some songs he had already recorded and one night as I listened to them over and over and over I realized that one had the perfect tempo and tone for my idea. I knew I had to bust my butt to come up with the words that would match the music. Thus did "A Mind" move from idea to reality.

If you're wondering how I first thought about this strange subject, well, there used to be a show called In Living Color that ran in the early 90s. It was where Jim Carrey, Jamie Foxx, Damon Wayans and many others became very well known for their comedy. Daman Wayans had a character that would talk gibberish and it always seemed like he was making fun of people who would use big multi-syllabic words (see what I did there?) without actually knowing what they meant or how to properly use them in a ssentence.

I in turn thought it would make an interesting idea for someone to sing gibberish strung together for no good reason. So I did and now you can hear it. Ain't life grand?

My New Mini-Zine, Badly Drawn......On Purpose

I've been meaning to do this for a few weeks but sometimes I get in these moods where I don't take care of the things I need to and this happened during one of those moods. A few weeks back I (finally) completed my first ever mini-zine called Badly Drawn.....On Purpose. I dug out some old photos from the Warped Tour that I went to in 1998 in Pittsburgh. I then drew some of those pictures in ink because well, why not? They were never intended to really look all that much like the actual photos. Even if I wanted them to, come on, doing it with an ink pen would require far greater artistic talent than I possess. The idea was just to have fun with it.

At first I thought I'd do it as a one-off project but now I want to continue doing it and next up I'm going to try some drawings from pictures taken at some of the ska shows I went to in the latter part of the 90s. You know, when ska was supposed to be the next big thing the major labels ruined, but it never came to fruition. Instead they signed a bunch of bands that kinda sorta sounded ska-ish and the real ska never quite broke all the way through. What better way to document that period of time than with crappy drawings that virtually nobody will see? Am I right? Stay tuned, there's plenty more great ideas like that one swimming around in the mush that is called my brain.

You can get the results of my wonderful artistic vision locally at Holy Mountain for the extra low price of FREE! I'm sure there are plenty of copies left. If you can't or don't want to go to an actual record store here in Tulsa then you have bigger issues than I can help solve. However just let me know and I will happily mail as many copies to you as your little heart desires. Never let it be said that I didn't do my part to make humanity better. Usually I do that by not involving myself with humanity but sometimes I have to put myself out there on a limb, emotionally naked (not like that sicko, I said emotionally) for all to abuse. Anyway, that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Ten For Tuesday Epidode 097: I'm Growing Tired Of Naming The Episodes

I don't think the last episode tore up the airwaves so I'm going in a different direction while staying in the same decade. Number 96 was alright but this one, this one means a lot to me, so many good bands, so many good tunes, so many good memories listening to them.

The Fabulous Thunderbirds - Wrap It Up
Jim Carroll Band - Wicked Gravity

Asia - Heat Of The Moment
E.L.O. - Calling America

Grand Slam Story Telling At The Ok, So Story Slam

A few weeks back I competed in the Grand Slam of the Ok, Ok Story Slam and now I have video of the event,  not that anybody has been clamoring to see it. My story is about an event that happened to me in the 1st Gulf War. It was a fun evening with a lot of great stories and I'm quite happy to have been able to be involved. Believe me, I'm just starting to realize just how many stories I have in me.

Ten For Tuesday Episode 095: Yeah It's A Week Late

Not much to say here, it's a week late and I have no good reason for it, that's just the way it is. The first three songs come from vinyl that I bought in Denver on the last road trip. I thought that the next two would go well with them. The last five are pretty much pretty new music in the ska/reggae vein that I enjoy. There you have it. Expect another episode next week so that I can get back on track. You'll have to check back to see what kind of music will be on it.

Ranking Roger - So Excited
The Members - Working Girl
Rubber Rodeo - Jolene
General Public - Rainy Days
The Specials - Why Part II (demo)
The Crombies - Mad At The World
The Debonaires - Music In My Soul
Melbourne Ska Orchestra - Get Smart
Leo And The Lineup - Life Goes On
Reggay Lords - One Day

notmovingpictures Episode 042: Peruvian Politics From The Outside

With this episode I catch on what has been going on lately. I've been attempting to learn guitar and have actually came up with a riff for a future song. Another song is done and I'm waiting for Aaron to finish the mix on it and also how the Grand Slam of the Ok, So Story Slam went for me as well as the status of the zine that I am working on. I also delve into the murky waters of Peruvian politics and describe how their President is elected as well as who the candidates were this election. Of course it's not over yet, the second part of the process is a runoff between the top two vote getters. I ended up talking for longer than I thought I would so there you go.

Ten For Tuesday Episode 094: Eclecticity Anyone?

Well, this one is a day late but cut me some slack, I've been busy getting back into work after a short vacation. Vacations are never long enough no matter how long they are and work is............well, work. That's all I have to say about that. As for the music this episode, it is quite eclectic as in all over the place and these kinds are usually my favorite. Check it out.

Urge Overkill - Positive Bleeding
The Pixies - Monkey Gone To Heaven
Dramarama - Last Cigarette
The Crombies - It's Not You
The Last Slice - Chicks A Trip
The Clash with Ranking Roger - Rock The Casbah
The Expanders - Man Should Not Hold Back

notmovingpictures Episode 041: Telling Stories

In preparation for the Grand Slam (which pits the monthly winners against each other)of the Ok, So Story Slam coming upon us rapidly I thought I'd tell a few stories. You see I'll be competing there on April 15th. To that end I recorded three tales from my life about my first bike ride, the time I flipped my car and going to see the Ska Against Racism tour in 1998. I also tacked on a story from the March Story Slam where I told a Sig Tau story about the Greek Games of 1984 at NSU. Of course once I started editing the stories and I found a much better way to tell the car wreck one. I'll keep that information stored away in the back of my brain so that I can use it later.

Ten For Tuesday Episode 093: 90s Post Hardcore Metal Rock Thing

I've been waiting for this one. There's a lot of cool music here featuring all (or most) from the 90s post hardcore/metal type of rock thing. How cool is that? On a side note, I have seen three of these bands and they were all in the 90s.

Fugazi - Bed For The Scraping
Hammerbox - Hole
Rollins Band - Disconnect

notmovingpictures Episode 040: The Vox Populi Connection

Episode 40 of notmovingpictures is my rambling tale of how I came to receive a demo tape from a band called Vox Populi that was from Shepherdstown, WV in 1995  and then reconnect with them over twenty years later all thanks to the internet age. It's also the story of that band told in their (or at least one of the members) own words. It just goes to show you it's never too late to find something or do something.

Iron Maiden at the BOK, Tulsa 2/26/16

So now of course I need to put up some pictures of Iron Maiden whose show I went to a mere three days after seeing Megadeth, this one though was in Tulsa. I was still trying to figure out the camera on my phone and we were in the nosebleed section so it doesn't always make for great pictures. Nor does the enormous group of cords hanging down from the rigging. It is what it is.

Megadeth at the Fillmore Auditorium, Denver 2/23/16

I've taken my sweet time in getting to this but finally, here are some pictures from the Megadeth show I road tripped to with Tommy, Chris and Robbie. I'm still learning to use the camera on this new (to me) phone. We were at the back so I zoomed in quite a bit and thought they looked good on the phone. When I pulled them off onto my laptop though, they didn't seem quite as impressive. You be the judge.

Ska Beat 2nd Anniversary Show Tape

This is the tape from the Ska Beat 2nd anniversary show. At the end the sports team came in without any advance notice for a promo before allowing me to end the show. What can I say, that's how things went at WMUL. Sports were king and music was an afterthought. Such is life. Click here to jump to the Internet Archive and listen or download.

Dave Hillyard & The Rocksteady 7 - Hillyard Street
Stubborn AllStars - Take Your Chances
Gondwana - Irie
Alpheus - Nothing Can Stop You
Aswad - Freedom Street

Long Beach Dub AllStars - Pass It On
The Inspector - Spanish Galleon
The Equators - Softly Softly
Bim Skala Bim - Set Me Up
The Dominant Seven - Stranded
Dave's Big Deluxe - Time After Time
The Robustos - Don't Be Down   cuts off

The Radiation Kings - Come Down
Jimmy Skaffa - Magic City
Boitovision w/Greg Lee - Big Bamboo

Edna's Goldfish - I'm Your Density
Fishbone - Party At Ground Zero

Ska Beat was a show I did in the latter part of the 90s as a community volunteer for 88.1 WMUL, Marshall University's radio station, in Huntington, WV. The show ran for almost three years, mostly in the Sunday noon to 2PM timeslot before shifting to a Thursday evening 8-10PM shift. It was a great time to see live music as many ska bands came through the Huntington area on their way to somewhere else.

Be forewarned, I have chosen to include all of the Public Service Announcements, weather updates, mistakes and whatever else was recorded along with the music. Yeah, I am that lazy. Also, these shows were taped on cassettes and as such may suffer from sitting around for all of these years. Additionally, WMUL had an ongoing issue of a loud hum that would periodically present itself when I was talking but normally it went away when the music was playing. Often I forgot to hit record or to turn the tape over at the midpoint of the show so there will be gaps in songs as well as some being omitted entirely. I have tried to annotate when that happened.

notmovingpictures Episode 039: The Extremely Long Return Road Trip

This very short episode was recorded on the return road trip to Denver. Tommy was pretty much wiped out energy wise and to be honest so were the rest of us so he chose not to talk. The drive through Southeastern Colorado is rather boring as is the Oklahoma Panhandle. Nothing but miles and miles of farmland. So I made a recap of the trip before signing off but that really isn't the end. I tagged on a short piece that I recorded after seeing Iron Maiden here in Tulsa just a few days later. Since I was driving I finished and what you hear last is a very long song from Iron Maiden off of their most recent album. Hope you like it.

Ten For Tuesday Episode 091: Kinda About The 90s

I've had the idea for this episode for a long time and finally it has come to fruition. Not all of the songs are from the 90s, I believe two are from 1989 but they all fit so well together it just had to be done. Perhaps my fiery rhetoric about that and why anybody who says Nirvana killed metal is wrong goes on too long but you can always fast forward to the music now can't you?

Sugar - A Good Idea
Seaweed - Go Your Own Way
The Tragically Hip - New Orleans Is Sinking
Matthew Sweet - I've Been Waiting
Soul Asylum - Somebody To Shove
The Pixies - Here Comes Your Man
The Lemonheads - Into Your Arms
Nirvana - Come As You Are
Urge Overkill, - Tequila Sundae
Teenage Fanclub - The Concept

Short Nights, Long Days and Mistakes

For me the day had started off early on far too little sleep. But that was okay, the reasons behind it are well worth it. My first major task to accomplish was dumping a full load of used shingles that were occupying my truck. The day before I had loaded the shingles (okay, with some assistance) and was already feeling sore from it. My thighs, lower back and elbows were killing me but I had a short time to get this done because there was a free lunchtime class at TCC (Tulsa Community College) called “Don’t Know How to Play Guitar” that I really wanted to attend. Every semester TCC’s Metro Campus offers a series of these introductory classes on various topics. This class advertised teaching beginners two or three chords and giving them a foundation on the guitar which is something I drastically need. I mean the cheap beat up acoustic I’ve had for about fifteen years continues to sit unused so it’s high time I buckled down and actually did something with it.

After a quick shower I jumped in my truck and raced to the campus and jumped into the first parking spot I could find. Grabbing the guitar case with its broken handle I hugged it to my body and fast walked my way into the building and through the door. It was then that I noticed that none of the people sitting in the large room had a guitar. It turns out I had my dates switched up. Today was “Don’t Know How to Draw Portraits” not the guitar class I was expecting. Feeling disappointed (and a bit embarrassed) I decided to stay and have something positive to show for my time. The class goal was to draw a portrait of actor Tom Hanks using pencil and then charcoal. Even though it’s been quite some time since I have drawn, especially something of this difficulty, I leapt into it, disregarding most of the instructor’s suggestions as I did it my way, on my timetable for better or for worse.

To me the finished product looks more like John Travolta than Tom Hanks but you be the judge. Maybe I need to get back into art, at least just a little and then things would actually look like they should. After stuffing the still unused guitar and the sort-of-looks-like-him portrait in my truck I had a quick lunch and a (far too) short nap before driving to work where a full, busy night awaited me. That’s life……………… and I’m still way too sore. The actual guitar class has to go better than this, presuming of course I remember to go on the right date that is.

notmovingpictures Episode 038: Road Trip To Megadeth

Episode 39 of notmovingpictures is a rambling discourse between Tommy and myself as we make the oh so long drive to Denver to see Megadeth in concert. Among the myriad of topics we touch on are:

Collective unconscious
Psychedelics/marijuana and their medicinal abilities and how Big Pharma wants treatments, not cures
How the music industry has changed in our lifetimes
What taking a road trip to see bands means to us
The need to rid ourselves of career politicians and why outsiders like Sanders, Trump and Carson are finding support
The culture of fame in sports, music and politics
Police shootings, faux outrage and no outrage about Flint
The news we are presented with is slanted and biased
Military operations and bombings in countries without Congressional approval
Obama being more Conservative than Bush but not recognized in the press
Laws attempting to be passed in the guise of religious freedom that really discriminate

As you can see we roamed over a lot of territory but it was the most interesting part of the drive. The Oklahoma Panhandle and Southeastern Colorado both have a glaring lack of things to keep you interested. Just miles and miles of farmland whichever way you look. So go ahead and listen.

My Mind Has Been Blown

2015 was a year of firsts for me. I got in front of an audience and told a story and later actually won. I started a zine thereby self-publishing my thoughts and ideas. I wrote a song and recorded it doing the vocals. All were very cool things that I want to do more of in the future. This year I’ve got another first. Allow me to explain. The week before leaving I had found out about the Rutten and Ranallo podcast and subscribed to it. Bas Rutten and Mauro Ranallo were an announcing team for the Pride Fighting Championship, a Japanese MMA company that at its height challenged the UFC for supremacy in the MMA world before succumbing to scandal.

Recently Bas and Mauro started a podcast and at the end of it they talked about how they were accepting music submissions from fans to play at the end of the episodes. The night before going on my four day road trip I quickly sent the mp3 file from the song that I had done (Conflict Registered) with some personal info and hoped that maybe in the near future they might play it on their show. Since I was on vacation though I didn’t check my email until yesterday, eleven days after I had sent my song in. However once I read my email I was in shock. Not only did they use my song, they used it on their very next show.

My mind was sufficiently blown and after listening to the episode and hearing my name mentioned on this bigtime podcast as well as other info it was completely destroyed. I’ll admit, as I sat there in awed silence some tears almost spilled out from my eyes. That’s how big of a deal this is to me. I’m the guy that has suffered from low self-esteem all of my life, who never thought he was good enough to do a song (or anything else) and despite myself I’ve done it. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think I’ll become famous or anything like that. It’s just that receiving such positive affirmation after decades of doubt and procrastination makes me feel a little bit good about myself. That’s a good thing.

So if you want head over to their site and you can find several ways to listen or even download the eighth podcast episode. Showing them some love is the right thing to do since they showed me some. Going even further go to bandcamp and download the song for free. I’m rather sure it won’t hurt you and it’ll make me even happier than I already am.

Ten For Tuesday Episode 090: Old School Metal Roadtrip

It's another road trip episode. Since we are in Denver to see Megadeth and Suicidal Tendencies and will see Iron Maiden back in Tulsa on Friday I decided to do an early to mid 80s heavy metal/hard rock episode. The 2nd set of songs all feature Jimmy Bain and the last........well the band names all begin with A. So it adds up to a rather cool group of songs and that's alright with me.

Megadeth - Killing Is My Business And Business Is Good
Suicidal Tendencies - I Saw Your Mommy
Iron Maiden - 2 Minutes To Midnight
Dio - We Rock
Gary Moore - Hiroshima
Hear N' Aid - Stars
Wild Horses - Face Down
Alcatraz - Island In The Sun
Armored Saint - Can U Deliver
Accept - Fast As A Shark

notmovingpictures Episode 037: The Day Before The Road Trip

This is a quick short episode where I touch on the impending road trip to Denver to See Megadeth and Suicidal Tendencies. It's a sorely needed stress break. Why? Because it seems major changes are coming with my job, how much and in what timeframe it's too early to tell. Once we get back from the road trip we're going to see Iron Maiden here in Tulsa so it will be a busy week. I also talk a little bit about the Peruvian Presidential elections but I hope to do a later more in depth episode in order to give the topic the time it deserves. We'll see. Also, I have a new song by The Slackers and it seems to fit, so take that.

Ten For Tuesday Episode 088: Another Falls Down

I originally wanted to pay tribute to Lemmy with a song from Motorhead's album released last year. Then I found the band Last In Line which featured (amongst their lineup of old Dio bandmates) bassist Jimmy Bain. While preparing the podcast I found out that Jimmy Bain died on Monday, January 25th. Weird timing for me. Another one gone, it's happening far too quickly. Enough of this, I'll let the music speak.

Motorhead - Thunder & Lightning
Motor Sister - Head Hanging Low
Last In Line - Devil In Me
The Clash - Spanish Bombs
Olaya Sound System - Los Olayas
Sublime With Rome - Where You Go

Ten For Tuesday is a podcast dedicated to playing the music I couldn't find anywhere else. The music I like varies from style to style, genre to genre and era to era. You will hear punk, ska, rock, Americana, metal, country, rockabilly and more from all over the world. It doesn't matter if it's a major label or indie as long as I like it then it gets played. The motto is Less Talk More Music which means you won't hear me waxing poetic for fifteen minutes between songs. At TFT its all about the music...and me of course.

It is what it is.

Don't Confuse Alone With Lonely

I spent the Christmas holidays by myself, unless of course you count the sporadic visitations of Alex The Cat and I don’t. My wife and son were visiting her cousin in Memphis and unfortunately I couldn’t get time off from work. They tend to not give me time off around the holidays even though I’m the only supervisor in the evenings and those that were on 1st shift jumped on requesting it early. The thing is that when people found out I was going to be alone they began to besiege me with invitations to join them but thankfully, I was able to defer their good intentions. You see, I don’t mind being alone, as a matter of fact I was looking forward to spending some time by myself.

For some reason people tend to confuse alone with lonely. The two are not the same. Time spent by myself is usually that rarest thing where I get to indulge myself. And I did. I stayed up as late as I liked, slept in without being concerned with setting an alarm. I ate pizza on Christmas Eve and Christmas day and since it rained for over two days straight I barely left the house. While I did get two podcasts recorded and ready to go mainly I read or caught up on my Netflix queue. Basically I just did what I wanted when I wanted. I didn’t venture outside until after midnight on Saturday. I finally braved the torrential downpours to get a few groceries and hit Whataburger for some comfort food.

I've said it many times that I'm not a social person not do I care much for celebrating holidays. If it weren't for my wife and son I'd never have a tree up or decorations of any kind around the house. It's just not my thing and there is nothing wrong with that. Not everybody is the same and I feel we should embrace what makes us unique. I'm just trying to be me and stay true to myself. As I get older it seems so clear to me how much unnecessary grief and drama we put ourselves through trying to project an image of what we really are not. Having said that I know that at times I drive my wife crazy with the way I am because she's Peruvian and they are very social people.

So there you have it. I was alone for Christmas and not sad about it. Sure I would have liked to be around my family but since I couldn't be, spending some quality time with myself was a nice option to have.
