notmovingpictures Episode 089: John Doe

It's been a while so this is a catching up episode. Another was about a third of the way edited when I decided to delete it and start on this one. Just felt right. Mostly I talk about taking the family to see John Doe at the Woody Guthrie Center where he talked about his book and performed some acoustic songs. Afterwards he took the time to great everyone who wanted to meet him individually and sign some autographs and take pictures. It was a great night and I left there feeling very happy.

In the future I can say that I will be seeing Henry Rollins in Oklahoma City in a few months and possibly Agent Orange, Alejandro Escovedo and the Descendents at various venues and dates. Time will only tell. Time we seem to take for granted when we really only have a limited amount of it. Thing is, we don't know when it will run out. Ten days or ten years, nobody can say for sure.

Tulsa Sewer Graffiti Art

This past weekend my wife, son and I decided to go to Riverside park and go into the sewer there to check out the graffiti, some of which is artistic and some, well, not so much. We went at least a quarter to a third of a mile in before turning back. We even met some fellow adventurers on their way in as we made our way out. This is some of what we saw.

It had been at least fifteen of sixteen years since I had seen The Slackers so imagine my surprise when I found out they were coming to Tulsa. Back in the day I was able to interview one of them (Agent J?) in Huntington, WV and I still have the tape buried away somewhere. Perhaps when I get another room in the house to use as my office I can dig all of that stuff out and upload it. The Slackers always put on a great show and do not disappoint. I just hope it doesn't take that long before I get to see them again.

This was the first time for me seeing Local H and all I can say is I hope there will be many more occurrences. Just two people playing stripped rock and roll yet with a very full sound that does not suffer from having no bass player, no second guitarist, not even a keyboard player. My friend Aaron has sung praises for catching Local H live for many years to me and finally I had the chance and listened to him. Call me converted now. I am a fan and can't wait until they come somewhere close again. I will travel to see them, they are that good.

Photo Album: Roddy Radiation 5/7/2015 Boulevard Trash Tulsa

Excited wasn't strong enough of a word for how I felt when I found out that guitarist Roddy Radiation (Byers) from the legendary 2Tone ska band The Specials was going to be in Tulsa. This was a must see show as far as I was concerned. I had actually had a picture taken with him on the Warped Tour in 1998 with the version of The Specials that was touring at that time. One of these days I'll get it scanned and show it here. I thought about mentioning it to him because he was very accessible in the small space that was Boulevard Trash but ultimately decided to let him be. It's not as if he would remember the few seconds that he took with me considering all that he was done in his life. Seeing him perform in this setting was more than enough for me.

I promise new episodes are coming with Tommy. As a matter of fact I am editing them now but in the meantime I felt like talking about music so here you go. Another episode of me rambling along about the recent concerts I've seen and those that are upcoming. Names like Prong, Sepultura, Testament, Local H have been seen and those like X, Alice Cooper, Megadeth and Scorpions are all on the schedule amongst others. Once again there is talk about wanting to do new music because I have a ton of lyrical ideas sitting and waiting but also about trying to learn to play a little guitar. In an effort to put content on this blog other than info on my podcast episodes I've decided to start uploading pictures from anything that strikes my fancy, so long as it's from something I've done or seen, with some info tacked on as well. At least this will fill the gaps until I feel like writing the odd short story, lyrics, bunch of crap, etc. Who better to start things off than one of my favorite musicians?





This photo was taken from the fourth time that I have seen Al in concert. Unlike the previous three shows there was no band backing him this time. It was just Al, his guitar and violinist Susan Voelz. The stories were there, spun in between songs, but the songs themselves had changed. A different energy had been given to them with no difference in the brilliance of the performance, it was if the songs lived, even breathed and adapted to the circumstances. That's part of his talent. I missed seeing him this past November right before my birthday but I won't make that mistake again.

It all closes up with some social media etiquette or at least how we do it and with that this chapter closes. However I have a feeling that once we records some new music another conversation will be had.
